House Sparrow

The house sparrow is an introduced bird to New Zealand. I love these little birds, even though they can be noisy and quarrelsome at times. Outside any café in NZ you will often find them, even inside as well. This is where I captured this fellow, outside a café at Mairangi Bay.

This one is the male. He has chestnut brown upperparts, streaked black, a dark grey crown, greyish brown rump and greyish white underparts. The black bib gets larger in the breeding season and the conical greyish pink bill turns black.

The female has dull sandy brown, streaked darker upperparts and greyish white underparts, with a pale buffy eyebrow and sides to neck.

The birds grow to around 14 cms and weigh about 30 G. Their call is an unmusical chatter of chirps and cheeps.

One way cafes try to stop the sparrows eating the sugar is to have the sugar in 1-teaspoon-size sealed paper sachets. But I also seen some sparrows try to peck at the paper to rip it open. They aren't stupid!!

Interesting photo as Pam has mentioned there is something strange about it. I also can not pick what it is, ends of the feather look strange! Never the less nice composition and colours

Hi Janice

What has happened here? Not up to your usual standard. Maybe cropped too much, or an effect from some post process work, noise removal maybe or over sharpened, or both. It has a strange look to it. This is not a criticism, but merely to help, as this is what the site is about, but sometimes people won’t be honest and I believe this is unfair on the member being critiqued as it doesn’t help them to improve. The pose and the catchlight are both delightful. Hope this helps my friend.

Nice picture of this house sparrow! Good pov and pose from him! Colors looks very natural but I think that maybe you use noise remover too much for we lose some details on the feathers... Still a good picture, (points tomorrow).
