[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
My daughter spotted this one while we were out walking in the field on a farm near Carolina in Mpumalanga. It is called a stink-locust or bushlocust here. The species is Dicyophorus spumans. They contain cardiac glycosides, and are toxic to eat. This baby gives the beatle a good run for his money for Star Wars Episode III, but it would probably rather inspire some exotic fashion designer into some new fasion creation for Fashion TV.

It was dusk when I took this pic, i set the flash EV down in order to get more of a fill effect. I only had the camera for about 5 days at the time, hadn't even read the whole manual yet (OK, only about 10% of it). I didn't have the 14-70 std lense with me so I had to make do with the 300. The pic was taken in raw .nef format. Aftertouch was convert to jpeg, crop, resize and then I took the real easy route and opened it in Microsoft Picture Manager and clicked on the Auto Correct button.

Enjoy

Really nice photo!
The subject looks just great - these red and black colours of his "armour" make very interesting contrast with fragile green branches.
Maybe the sharpness isn't great, but I like the composition very much.
Well done!
Welcome on TN :-)

I think you've croped it too tight, it would have been good to put it on a black BG, it would give more presence to the bushlocust.
TFS.

Welcome to TN Eben. Nice first post. I think we used to call these guys a " koringkriek" when we were small but I can't remember for sure. I look forward to some really great shots that you're going to post with your new equipment. Well done

Very nice macro Eben.
I like you first post.
Good colours, composition and details.
Nice to see that you used the RAW.format,
you have to do a lot of PP to get the best of the picture,
because a RAW-format is like digital negative.
I think you could get more of this, I did a WS just to show.
Very well done.
Welcome to TN.

Welcome on TN Eben!

Heavy armoured and painted locust. I don't think that I wish see this one on Fashion TV, especially on 'Midnight Hot' :-))) Great subject, good quality, maybe little too soft.

Welcome to TN, Eben. This grasshopper is amazing by it's colors. We don't have these here. Position on the plant is very good. But it doesn't come sharp on my screen. As you mention using the 70-300mm, it might come the inadeqacy with the subject distance. Awaiting some nice S.A. macros of yours in the future.

Welcome to TN. Nice shot to begin with, a very colourful and interesting subjet. It is a pity you did not take advantage of the 800 pix. TN offers.
Hope to see more photos and critiques soon.

Welkom hier by TN Eben! I like your first post a lot. The composition and color is great. These guys alway look like they are dressed in leather to me.

Very well done and thanks for posting. I hope to see lots more of your work here on TN.

Welcome to TN.
As others have said, the image could have been a bit sharper, but its still an interesting image. Such vivid colour, it would make a good fashion combo for an evil Star Wars character. Well done.
