[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This macro of two butterflies mating in my garden was taken with the settings suggested by Bente: M(anual) mode, 1/200, f13 and flash. At this setting I had to correct the exposure as the shot was underexposed. Fortunately the RAW shots give us a lot of flexibility.
DOF is indeed better Bente.

We call these koolwitjes but I don't know the official and english name. Who does?

I like the combination of the butterfly colours with the light green of the leaves. It seems to harmonize. Does anyone know what the black/grey dots on the butterflies are? Could they be from must/fungi or is it something else?

Lovely! You've done a splendid job here keeping everthing in focus. Colours are excellet, well done Jan.

Tjonge Jan,
Erg goed werk.

superbe Jan,
i think that are "Pieris brassicae" , pieride du chou in french. good capture with idéal DOF.

Good capture and excellent timing. Your dof is also excellent. Well taken

Yes, these are the Pieris brassicae, Large whites.
I'm glad you found the settings useful. To a limit it's always better to get a somewhat dark photo (as details can be retrieved) than a photo that's too light. In that case you cannot get the detail back.. Another thing you might try to win more light is altering the ISO setting, say going for ISO 400 instead of 100 or 200.
From this angle you'd really needed more than F-13 to get the entire ensemble within DOF range, as the right one's head is falling outside to some extent. But this is a very tricky angle to work with, anyway. Don't know if a small, cautious step to the right had been possible?

What caught my attention is the texture of the laefs. It is really great. Nice capture of the butterflies Jan.
