Good morning,
today's post is a Tabanus bromius Linnaeus a Band-eyed Brown Horsefly. Horse-flies (family Tabanidae) are among the world's largest flies.

Adult horse-flies feed on nectar and other plant juices; the females also feed on blood. Males lack the necessary mouth apparatus to do so. Most horse-flies feed on mammal blood, but some species are known to feed on birds, amphibians or reptiles.

A horse-fly's bite can be very painful. Unlike insects that pierce the skin, horse-flies have mouth parts that work like miniature knives, which they use to slash open the skin with a scissors-like motion. This causes the blood to seep out as the horsefly licks it up. When attacking humans they usually prefer the buttocks, legs, and feet.

The more funny photo would have been this one showing my husband behind me when i took this photo, protecting me with a fly-flapper in case if this fly will assault me ;-)
But we forgot to make such a shot, sorry ;-)

Have a wonderful sunny weekend.

Hi Sabine,
I remember being bitten by a Horsefly when I was a kid, it hurt! Excellent macro shot, amazing detail and beautiful colours in the eye. An unusual background but I think it works very well. A shame you didn't get the other shot :-)
Regards,
Adrian

Hallo Sabine,
Super gelungen!

Hello Sabine ,, A Great shot from the horse flies , good details lenzes colours pov sharp ,very good ,Greetings Teunie .

Heinz

Hi Sabine,

Hello Sabine,
Wonderful macro. It's very close and well detailed.POV,colors, sharpness and composition are excellent.
TFS....:-)

Hi Sabine,
this is reall macro, very close with great sharpness and very good DOF. Well exposed and good POV. Only nit is the white BG but thats the nature.
Great work, my friend.

Lovely studio shot! Looks as if it was posing for you :)
Very good details, DOF and shapness. The white BG is strange but effective and very descriptive.
I think is the best macro of this critter I have seen around, really detailed.
TFS, Felipe.

An absolutely stunning macro, there is so much detail, especially in the eye and the hairs underneath the body. The high-key background is also very effective, what was the surface?
I've added it to my favourites.
Very well done!
Andy

Hi, Sabine.
Superb sharpness and DOF. Nice colors and really very close.

Wow! Wonderful extreme close-up here Sabine! Look at that dagger! Looking to your notes, this must be a female one. i like the colours ant the details on the eyes a lot! Such a lişvely and clear shot! Different and nice bg, looks like a studio work. Congratulations! This one has to jump to my favourites!
Thank you!

Jorge Hulin.

Hello Sabina,
This is really one of the most terrible insect I have meet in my life :) And even if so colourful and... beauty (!) I do not like to meet it in the wild. I really believe you know why :)
By the way, picture is very good both because of POV and DOF. Only the BG would be more natural as for me (eg. human nehd - hehehe, I'm jocking ;>)
TFS this great macro picture!
Best withes and have a nice evening!
Radomir

Hi Sabine,

Last year while on holiday I visited a remote beach. There was a pond close to the beach and while stalking some butterflies I got attacked by these critters. I had nearly fifty bites in a very short time and was one of the few times I was running away in the wild. Nasty beasties these. Nice macro showing the appendages.

I posted a WS to show you one chowing on my arm. :)
