[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Polyommatus icarus.

It’s a small butterfly with gleaming blue upper part, narrow black line near the edges and white tassel. The lower part is grey brown with black, wit rim spot and a range orange spots along the edges of the behind wings. Females are of above brown, with some blue and orange spots. The span of the wings is about 25 mm. In the Netherlands they live everywhere in the country. You must seek them, but if you do, you will find them. In one year comes 1 till 3 new generations out of the eggs.



The butterflies and the caterpillars suck nectar. They get it from flowers from difference sorts of spice. Some of the caterpillars try to over live the winter, and comes in spring out of the cocoons. The further development goes afterwards very fast, of generation on generation. There very many blue ones exist and it is often a laborious work, distinguish them of each other. A lake or less clear blue colour to the upper part, and small spots around the eyes, is to base is all types own. The caterpillars of some types become by fiddle visited, because the sweet juice which they break away.

Today I go farther. I try 800 asa out, with this 70-300 mm lens and the canon close up lens 5ooD. This last one you can use as a filter, you can screw it up.
I used it together with a speedlight 420 ex. You know I get pleasure in it, because it's working. It this one I try some thing out what members said in there critique. Howard says use a tripod for shots like this one, well I must admit, not a bad result. Another friend says, use a higher speed, for a little much movement and it must be better. well I did do it to and I must say, I like the results I made this day. So, I am still learning, and important I want to learn. I hope you like it too.

it's soooo lovely, this butterfly is phantastic. The wings are shimmering, I like this blue colours so much. A beautiful arrangement, thanks.
Good sharpness and no pixel/noise to see, the 350D can do wonderful shots even with higher ASA. Thanks for your successful experiments

I see that your DOF is going softer and softer in the BG with this lens. I also had this with my Reynox-Lens. Now I use a Soligor Extension Tube set - 3 rings. I love them. Bye.

Hallo Jaap, this is a very nice picture. Very good sharpness, great DOF, POV, details and very nice colours. Framing and compositon are excellent. But I think ASA 800 is little bit to high. Also the speed must not 1/160. Than I think the sharpness is better. The 350D is a very good Digi. To use the speedlight is great!
I take in a workshop a similar photo of the S7000. I made only a cutout from the original photo.

A beautiful shot of this B/Fly. The detail is excellent, I like the way the details on the flowers infront of the B/Fly is sharp and blurred in the BG. Lovely colours too.

Ik meen dat vlinders uw eerste passie was, en dat dar alles om begonnen is, en nog steeds is de drang om het mooie insect te fotograferen nog altijd aanwezig, en steeds met een grote verzorgdheid en mooi gepresenteerd, ik hou werkelijk van uw fotografie Jaap!

Another very beautiful picture and a succesful experiment.
Superb colors, excellent POV and DOF, great framing and composition. Maybe just a very little soft on details (try a bit of sharpenning in Photoshop...maybe you'll like it), but it is still a very well done picture.

Although the OOF wing that's nearest to us is a little distracting, it's a beautiful butterfly and the detail on the head and wing is great. Lovely contrast with the yellow flowers as well.

Hoi Jaap,

Goede scherpte en prachtige details. De kleuren zijn prachtig en vooral het geel van de bloemen is zeer indringend. Dit zijn de platen waarom ik van TE op TN ben gaan posten; ja inderdaad ... het waren jouw vlinderfotos die mij hierheen brachten. Prachtig gedaan!

Interesting experiment, jaap. The diagonal composition works well, here. Nice POV showing the partly opened wings as a pretty collaret, as well as the body of the butterfly.

I find the background a bit overpowering, with its the strong colour and shape of the yellow flowers and the dark top left corner.
