Good capture of what is becoming quiet a rare insect now so many Oak forrests are being felled or cleared of old rotten timber they use for breeding.
Have a look at the details here on the life history so you can use the information to update your note so people can learn more about the image you show, which is what TN is all about.
TFS the flash seems to have worked well and there are no highlights to distract the eye from the main subject.

If there is one beetle, this is it. The Stag is my favorite. A nasty looking fellow. Excelent capture and details. Well done.

Interesting critter, good sharpness, colours and great DOF for your F-2.8. Good diagonal POV. I can't help wondering how on earth this chap manages to look straight ahead, but then maybe he doesn't ;-))

I like this one, very common where I live some time ago, but know dissapearing as Robert said. He made a nice compliment of your post. I dont like very much the flash effect in this one, but this time I am sure you had no chance, at least you could see it. Thansk!

Vey nice shot of this impressive beetle. You have used the cameras flash and macro mode very well here. It's a pity that adults only live a few months.

Hi Peter. This is a very nice shot of an elusive insect. Your pov and DOF are great and you have excellent sharpness. Great composition too. I like stag beetles, used to have lots of them at my last house but not this one - yet. TFS :)

Hi Peter,
very impressive shot of the Stag Beetle,
just seen presented on TN's front page.
Much more than just descriptive.
Perfect details, good colours,
and a very well chosen point of view.
Thanks and regards,
Peter Stoeckl
