Hello everyone

I tell you a short and sad story:
For the past couple of weeks i've been visiting a great place for photographers. It's a 45 minute drive from my home, near a forest and some low mountains. I've been going there with a friend of mine, who also enjoys the beauties of nature and fancies photography. He says he knows that place for at least 20 years and it always was the same. It's nothing really special, just a nice sunny in the afternoon skirt of forest and a couple of puddles. But all these put one next to another make a splendid place for the fauna. I'm talking Buteo buteo, Natrix natrix, Coronella austriaca, Lacerta sp., Rana dalmatina, Bombina variegata, Mantis religiosa, Tetigonia viridissima, Aeshna mixta, Sympertum sp and so on (these are only some that came to my mind now).
Unfortunately, just as we speak people there are cutting the forest and destroying the ponds with their tractors and big vehicles.
It's really said to have known such a nice place, full of life and color and know that in say maybe 1-2 years it will be no more :(

This is one of the shots taken there, a praying mantis (Mantis religiosa) which is one of the beautiful animals facing a really hard time there.

Hope you like it.

Sal Horia!
Excellent shot of the mantis. Good POV and framing, very well blurred background, even more so that taken with a compact camera. Congratulations,
Mark

Very impressive. The shape and the colour of this Mantis are really brought out by the dark background. It's spot on and a great composition. - Your news is so sad - it happens all the time here too! New houses are popping up like mushrooms around us just where there is a lot of thyme that favours the Large Blue (Maculinea arion).
Thanks and regards, Ulla

Hi Horia,

Superb shot, I like the composition and your POV, the detail is sharp and clear, the colours are lovely with a great BG that I think creates a 3D effect with the mantis and the branch. Sorry about the destruction of your Forest, we are so lucky in the UK as so much is protected.

Regards Hilary :)

Hello horia,

Thank you, Arnaud

Hi Horia
It's sad to read your note...but there's no difference between any place on earth... :(
mankind need more and more spaces...
But your photo impressed me for the great lights in the mantis, fantastic colours and sharpness, good DOF, POV and BG.
regards; sorry for the lost;

Ciao Horia, nice close rich in colors and details.
POV and DOF are great.
Usefull notes.

Hi Horia,
it's phantastic - what a wonderful insect.
The green wings are shimmering and I love the dark BG, a perfect shot.
I never had the chance to see a mantis - but I'd like to see one, but don't know where to find. Hope you also will find them next year - you realy told us a sad story.
Thanks for sharing, I like it so much

Hello Horia,
I see your photo with pleasure, it is sharp well coloured and well composed.
But I read your notes with dismay. Your story reflects what we are doing to our planet in the name of growth and jobs. Soon even the nature resrves will not be reserves!
This is what is so good about TN: it will help to increase an appreciation of nature and maybe help to save it.

Perfect composition and a great BG. Nice details and colours as well.

I read your note with interest. It seems such a shame that your favourite place is being destroyed. I live in the middle of a town but luckily the local council are sensitive to green issues. My favourite spot (where my rabbit was taken today and all the butterflies in summer) has been designated a green spot and they are actively trying to preserve it as a nature area. I hope the same fate happens for your spot before it is too late

Hola Horia. Me agrada mucho esta bella foto de una Mantis. Tiene exelentes colores y un a gran definicion por lo que se puede apreciar con detalle todo su cuerpo. saludos Luis52.

Hi Horia,
An excellent full body shot on this Mantid. Beautiful colors and sharp detail from the spot on exposure. Great OOF backround shows him very well.

Hello Horia

What a very sad note. This happens all too often. On a happier note, this is a brilliant shot. Excellent low POV. Good colour and excellent quality. Nice work. TFS.

Hello Horia,
The details are nice, clear and sharp.
superb colours, lighting and exposure. The POV is good.
Well composed, great framing and excellent notes.
Thanks for posting, have a great week.

Hello Horia,
This is a wonderful macro, as beautiful as the story you tell in the note is sad!!
I like the lines in your composition, macro work is well done and gives great details in the insect!

Hi Horia!
Your story is prototypical of this phenomenon happening all over the world today. It is a sad, hard-hitting story that rings a warning bell for the entire humanity.
Coming to your picture of Praying Mantis, it is a great image from every point of view -- perspective, depth of focus, colours and sharpness.
Sadly, this creature will perish with the destruction of its habitat. :(
Thanks for sharing it, my friend.

TFS y saludos... Ricardo

One of the insects that more impassion me and less opportunities I have had of seeing.
A great POV and coloring are the strong points of the image, besides the composition.
The sharpness is very good, together with a diffuse background that to even enhance more the first plan of the scene.
TFS and regards... Ricardo

Hello Horia,
sad that those natural habitats are getting lesser all the time. This mantis is a great represant of all the animals praying for their own space. Very well captured and composed. The pose and the somber lighting look wonderful. The OOF BG and the POV greated a wonderful depth.

Great shot and a sad story, Horia. I like the color and composition in the shot. The story reminds me of how some early photos and drawings of Yellowstone helped establish it as a National Park. Of course, that was 100 years ago, before progress became economic development.

I feel your pain, far away lands all over are in the same position! :( Wonderful photo, brilliant composition and POV! TFS - Xplorator Radu

Hi Horia,
What a sad story. Things like that are more and more common unfortunately and this is really, really sad. It seems like people just don't care about natural environment and this is happening everywhere around the world :(

This is an excellent portrait of this Mantis. Details, composition and lightning are very good. I love this soft atmosphere created by this unusual lightning. Well done and well seen. Thanks,
Claudine

A sad story indeed. But an excellent shot. Wonderful color, details, and composition. Nice work.

Hello Horia,

Excellent and nice picture of this Praying Mantis... I like the diagonal formed by the insect... Nice colors and lots of details! Excellent pov and dof having the blurry bg enahancing the animal... It is so sad knowing that this beautiful place won't exist no more in a near future... Has the local population tried to fight against that destruction? Petition? Committee? etc...

Great picture and TFS,

Michel

Hi Horia, great macro-shot of this Mantis, the insect that I prefer!! Splendid POV and beautiful saturated colors, well done, Didier.

Hello Horia,
perfect portrait of an ample bodied female Mantis.
Flawlessly sharp, colours well saturated and naturalistic, composition very strict and well balanced. An icon.

The story you tell us here is really saddening and moving.
Ignorance and lack of feeling of locals and/or authorities has ruined a lot. My impression is that during the last two or three decades things have slightly turned to the better in my place, but still there is a lot of blind destruction going on here.
I think I know what you are feeling - a sad loss, and a feeling of being helpless. But let us stay optimistic, let us explain, convince, and fight for better awareness. We have no other choice.
Picture documents and stories like the one you have posted are a perfect way to convince people and make them aware of treasures they have been unaware before.
With many thanks, and best regards,
Peter

Hello my friend!

Yes, very sad story indeed. People thinks only about own business, not about natures. Half of Poland was sold to international corporations which build big markets or factories everywhere. Best of all, our government is going to build international highway crossing national park! It's madness.

Picture is very good, very well composed with your note. Sad mood. This mantis looks like praying during sunset for better place to live.

Hello Horia,

I like the exposure level here, low key. I had a go around with a mantid recently, they seem to be larger now and easy to find..

Hi Horia.
You photo is very beautiful, I really like it very much. Mantis reflect very well diffuse light and this is a good example. The fill flash is perfect, I guess you used the "high tech" difusser :)
About you story, is the story of most of us. All our land is was full of forest and rivers wirh hundreds of species, and nowadays is very difficult to find an original forest, most have been replaced with eucaiptus and pine for forestal purposes :(
Regards, Felipe.

a great shot, I love praying mantis, they are such interesting "bugs" , sad story indeed that you write about...

Hi,

Absolutely amazing profile of this mantis Horia. I had no ideea this species lives in Romania. I've never seen one. I like the composition, the colors and details. The note is also useful, especially the EXIF. I apreciate the fact that you also posted information about weather conditions and the time when the picture was taken. This way I can learn a lot more from your work. Very good job!

Details are a little lost because the pic is in overall a little too dark. I think that if you had increase the lightness from the original pic, this post would have drown more attention.
Good subject colors and composition.
