[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This shot was taken in my backyard while I was sitting in a blind (Hide), tripod setup, and VR lens mounted. It was a miserable day with clouds everywhere and the sun would always break out for seconds just enough time to ruin a shot.

Greg

My setup when shooting:

1. This was shot in the afternoon, around 12:00 pm.
2. I used a tripod.
3. Setup the branch, loaded peanut butter and seed on the backside away from camera view.
4. Used the Nikon 200mm lens with 1.7 TC for 340mm range, turned off the VR.
5. Went inside my hide and waited for some visitors to show.
6. Focused on anything that would hold still and fired off several shots at once.
7. I was set in manual mode in order to more readily adjust to the changing light.
8. Kept adjusting the Shutter Speed and Aperture to compensate for clouds, shade and light when the sun broke through.

Hi Gregory

This is definately one of the best woodpecker shots i've ever seen! Really well done!
Excellent POV, suepr sharp details, great light and superb colors! The BG really works perfectly there. I also like the impecable DOF and the very nice framing.
Great note, too :)

Hello Greg.
Interesting note in how to shot a woodpecker in the backyard.
Did you turn VR off because the lense was mounted on a tripod?
The result is excellent, really well exposed and framed.
Green BG is amazing and the details on this bird (female?) are great.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Gary, you have made a great portrait of the Downy Woodpecker. Exposure, colours, sharpness and DOF are very good. Well done,
Janice

Hi Greg,
Definitely a beautiful bird shot. A miserable day gives very often the best condition to have a well balanced exposure and a natural image. It's proven here. This is a female (lack of red cap); it could also be a juvenile (male or female) for the same reason. I like the the eye expression. Great shot, with the ideal BG!

Hi Gregory,
Wonderful capture, the colours are great, especially the soft BG.
Very informative and useful note.

Hi greg,
Absolutely a great shot. You'd been able to change the bad light condition to your advantage. I do not think that I'd love this photo this much under bright sunlight.
Excellent work.:)

Hi Greg,
Flawless composition and framing on this shot. Spot on exposure has the colors and detail looking superb. Excellent sepertation from the backround really gives a nice OOF backround of soft shades of green.
A real beauty! Nice camera work.
Scott

Hi Gregory
Very Impressive!
Nice fine details and crisp sharpness. Perfect exposure. I like the slight tilt of the branch, was this natural or did you tilt the camera purposely? Either way, this is an all around perfect shot. Very well done!
Mike

Excellent quality Greg.
Outstanding work that I've come to expect from your hand :)
Not a nit,
Very well done.

Gregory,

Nice job with this Downy. They are great little birds.
