Hummingbird Clearwing Moths

There is a group of daytime flying moths referred to as Hummingbird moths. These moths are members of the Sphinx or Hawkmoth family. Included in this unique group are the Whitelined Sphinx, the Snowberry Clearwing, the Slender Clearwing and the Hummingbird moth. The term clearwing means exactly that......their wings are primarily a clear membrane like bees, wasps or flies. Only the out edge portion of their wings are covered with scales.

There are three predominant members in this group being the Snowberry, the Slender and the Hummingbird Clearwings. Of the three, the Hummingbird Clearwing is the largest having a body length of 3 to 3.5 cm and a wingspan of 5 cm. These moths feed on low Blueberry, Snowberry, Honeysuckle, Dogbane and Hawthorn. Flight action is similar to that of a Hummingbird in that they have the ability to hover and while feeding extend their proboscis for the purpose of gathering nectar. This further confuses novices as the uncoiled proboscis gives the impression of a beak. Definitely an intriguing sight for the unfamiliar, particularly when observed for the first time.

Allo Jean-Paul,

Salutations
Anne

Hi Jeanpaul,
a wonderful hummingbird-moth, I love the species with the glasswings very much.
I also had a hummingbird-moth here in the last days, but with "normal" wings, not so phascinating transparent ones, but I saw them in Thailand. Very amazing, thanks for sharing yours, we can see the glasswings very good here, bye

Superb snapshot of a hummingbird moth, JP, trying to suck nectar from those lovely flowers which look like forget-me-nots to me.
The wings are whirring so fast you get only a blurred impression of them.
TFS.

Bonjour jean-Paul !
Valerie.

Hello Jeanpaul,
Well done mf. I like the soft light, wonderful color, and great details I see :)

Salut JeanPaul,
congratulations on this one, I know how hard it is to capture one of those clearwing moths. You did a fabulous job. POV, sharpness and details are wonderful. A very nice motion blurr on the wings without loosing any of the crispness.
Excellent work,.
Sky

Hello Jeanpaul,
very well captured typical hovering pose of the glasswing hawkmoth. The body precisely on focus, the strong motion blur of wings demonstrates the visual impression of the human eye.
Vivid colours in the background are a pleasant memory of splendid summer meadows.
With thanks, and best regards,
Peter
