This is a By the Wind Sailor, Velella velella. I encountered this one, and thousands of others, one time when i went to Pacific Grove. The beach and nearby water were full of them. They are a type of jellyfish. when the winds blow in a certain direction they're driven to the shore where they eventually turn all transparent like their sail. Someone who was walking on the beach told me that they were called "Blue Sailors" but i haven't found that name anywhere else. The sails on the top come in two directions one of which causes the animal to go east and the other west, given the prevailing winds in the mid pacific where they come from.
you can find out more at this site
I've got a theme on TrekEarth of jellyfish |

Excellent shot of the By the Wind Sailor, Tom. I have never heard of them called Blue Sailor's either. . .have always heard "By the Wind Sailor," as well. I love the color and the shadows on the ground in the water. LOVELY POV and DOF! :)

Wow Tom, you've really captured the true color of this. I've only seen them on the beach, what a treat to see it floating. I love the shadown underneath that you've caught. Well done.
