[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Great Salt Lake is among the saltiest bodies of water in the world, containing approximately 6 times the average salt content of the ocean. This is due to the fact that the lake has no outlets. Water evaporates from the surface, leaving the minerals behind. The lake is the remnant of the ancient Lake Bonneville which covered much of the state of Utah and parts of the surrounding states during the last ice age.

I did do some editing in Photoshop. I used levels, curves, and boosted the saturation a little to make up for what was lost when it was scanned. The only major change to the original was that I removed a small red buoy using the clone stamp tool.
