[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This photo may not seem to exciting but I'm going to document a storm we had on Lake Erie just a few days ago. I was going to make a collage of photos but felt they told a better story seeing them full size. Lake Erie is where I live .Well on the shores of Lake Erie on the Northern Coast in Canada. In this photo I am looking across the lake towards New York which is on the other side.


"Lake Erie is the smallest of the Great Lakes in volume (119 cubic miles) and is exposed to the greatest effects from urbanization and agriculture. Measuring 241 miles across and 57 miles from north to south, the lake's surface is just under 10,000 square miles, with 871 miles of shoreline. The average depth of Lake Erie is only about 62 feet (210 feet, maximum). It therefore warms rapidly in the spring and summer, and frequently freezes over in winter. The drainage basin covers parts of Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Ontario. Because of its fertile soils, the basin is intensively farmed and is the most densely populated of the five lake basins. "

Because of the shallow depth of the lake we experience great shifting of water with wind..you can acutally see it occuring it happens so fast..almost like holding a bottle sideways and watching the water go from end to end when you tip it!

This photo was taken on November 30th, we had just read in the marine weather forecast that a gale wind was coming the next day from the West. A gale being a wind over 35KNOTS or about 40MPH ( whole trees in motion; inconvenience in walking against wind )

At the point of the photo the wind was blowing from the East though and I could actually see the water flowing like a river to the western basin of the lake. The wind was blowing about 20-25Knots but it was the lowest I'ld ever seen the water get since I'ld lived here. This soon would change!

Hi Donna,
sounds like a very interesting series is coming up. I like this composition, excellent POV, with a deep view across the lake. I like the grey frame, it adds to the mood.. of a storm is brewing.

Hi Donna,
Just curious what will happen next. Love the overall colors in this photo. Especially the pinkish color of the first layer of water. The photo does need a small tilt to the right.
