Scarlet darter (Crocothemis erythraea) male
kingdom: Animalia
phylum: Arthropoda
subphylum: Hexapoda
class: Insecta
order: Odonata
suborder: Anisoptera
family: Libellulidae
This is the redest species of dragonfly you could possibly find. The male has red body, red eyes, red legs, the works! On this photo you can clearly see the orange tinge at the base of its wings.
UPDATE 11/Dec/2006: I also posted a workshop with a tighter crop of the same photo, sharpened a bit. I hope you like it better.

Hello Stavros,
the composition of your picture is very nice. The grey rock in the foreground and the dragonfly are in focus and constrast structurally and in the case of the insect by the brilliant red colour against the blurred background. The yellow green part on the right introduces a further quality which, however, does not interfere with or distract from the dragonfly. Sharpness on the body/abdomen could be a little higher: It appears that the focus plane is just some mm in front of the insect.
- A beautiful first posting to TN.
Welcome and best wishes, Peter
Excellent picture of this colourful dragonfly perched on a rock, Stavros.
Very good point of view, sharpness and colours.
Welcome to TN.
