| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Keeping with my Praia do Forte bird series...This is a Vivi or Gaturamo Verdadeiro (Purple-throated Euphonia, Euphonia chlorotica). It is impossible not to be sensitive to this beautiful little jewel of nature. Even if you don't pay attention to birds, I doubt you wouldn't when spotting a Vivi.
Something about it:
The Purple-throated Euphonia is found east of the Andes from Colombia and Venezuela to northern Argentina but is largely lacking from the Amazon Basin except along the river Amazon / Solimões.
They inhabit forest borders, caatinga and chaco scrub and gallery woodland. It is more likely to be found in drier habitats.
The male is blue-black above with a deep purple head and throat. The forecrown and underparts are bright yellow. The female is olive above and whitish below with yellow on the forecrown and flanks. |
