I want to start a small series of dedications to some TN members very dear to me, who have helped me, during my membership here, develope my photography skills, but not only... :)

I also haven't posted a snake shot in a very long time, and i kinda felt like it, so t thought i'll mix the two of them and dedicate this to Jacob (Bufo), another herpeto lover here on TN.

This is a Smooth Snake - Coronella austriaca, found 2 years ago during out studies in the northern part of Romania.

I really like the lesson this picture shows: we found two specimens that day:
- this one, in a very dark habitat, full of rocks and fallen leaves
- and another one, on a sandy soil habitat, specimen which was a lot brighter and vividly colored.
You can easily notice the camouflage coloration on this one - rather darker than usual.

The smooth snake is a snake with a very wide range, from S-England, France and N- and central Spain and Portugal to east to south Scandinavia and Russian Federation and south to Italy and Greece. Also N-Asiatic Turkey and N-Iran.

As a habitat, it can be found in a variety of usually dry and sunny areas; in northern areas often associated with sandy heathland with stands of old heather but elsewhere occurs in hedgerows, wood edges and open woods and on bushy and rocky slopes, embankments etc. In south found in more open places, often with only sparse vegetation, such as screes, stone piles and even cliffs and rock-cuttings, where it lives partly in crevices. Also occasionally encountered in moist habitats, especially in the south.
It occurs down to sea level in northern areas but tends to be montane in south of range, extending to over 1800 m in some places and reaching 2600 m in S-Spain.

Hope you'll like it :)

Hi Horia,
Excellent composition here! DOF exaggerates the size even more and visible forked tongue gives a final touch to this great job.

Hello Horia,
This is a good POV to capture the whole length of the snake, the front third being sharp and well presented.
As this species is rare in Sweden, people have been encouraged to look at the round pupils of the eye to differentiate it from the Adder, which is often killed because people are afraid of it.
Fortunately all reptiles in Sweden are now protected because even the Adder is becoming rarer.
TFS this fine contribution,
Best wishes, Ivan

This is one creature I am terribly scared of, Horia. Something to do with my unconscious mind, I am afraid, in spite of the fact that this creature is deified and held in great esteem in my country.
Enough to say that your image is VERY GOOD.
Bye . . . . .

Hi there Horia, a snake, a snake!! No I'm not scared of them - but only because I don't live where there are snakes. But I think if I did live where you do, I would be scared of them.
Thank you for your sharing of these creatures, as I have learnt a lot on TN about snakes,
Janice

Hello Horia,
My so not favourite creature!
But I admit... Snake is well depicted, and you found a nice pose to press the button...
Good details, Iappreciate the motion blur in the tongue!

Hello Horia,
One of my favorite subjects! I like this low POV you had and this great timing to catch it with its tongue out! This is not easy to do! You caught also very good details with great DOF and composition. This is well done and well seen as this guy looks like its environment. Thanks!

Hi Horia,
Chapeau d'avoir pris le serpent dans toute sa longueur et vu de cette perspective. Je n'aime pas beaucoup les serpents, mais je conviens qu'ils sont photogéniques.(Il y aussi Yves qui est herpétologue).
Meilleures salutations

Hi Horia.
I welcome a variety almost in all. It enriches our experience and knowledge. I especially like your POV and reproduction of the head, eyes and tongue of the snake. Soft lighting is very suitable for your model and for reflection of its features. I also like vertical framing and composition, excellent sharpness and details both the shake and BG. Note is perfect too. My compliments and best regards.
Yours Alexei.

Excellent note too!

Hello Horia,
I feel honoured, but also very glad for another great herpeto image here on TN! I find it often very surprising that on a picture snakes seem quite large, whereas in the field or in hand snakes appear very small and fragile. From this point of view you get a wonderful idea of the size of the snake and the patterns. The coronella is widespread throughout Europe but never really abundant.
Here in the Netherlands is seems a bit lighter on base colour.

Two years ago bird watchers were really excited: in a nature reserve (De Hamert) was a Short-toed eagle (a very rare vagrant) present for more than 3 months. The eagle was seen nearly every day, with 'snakes' (= smooth snake and slow worm). Very often the prey could be identified as smooth snake. The estimate on the population of Smooth snake before was appr. 30 individuals. After having seen the eagle and the remaining presence of Smooth snakes, it was estimated on >100 individuals. This shows the hidden lifestyle of this snake. By the way: The smooth snake is not really threatened: in areas were drought is a serious problem, the smooth snake takes over the ecological niche of Vipers (Vipera berus).

Anyway Horia, thanx a lot for your kind note and wonderful image.
Best Regards, Jacob

Hi Horia

Spoken with forked tongue – one for snakes and one for Jacob.

Good use of the vertical composition for this shot. The colours are very natural, the details on the front half of the snake are brilliantly sharp while the rest shows sufficient detail for an overall good effect, and the exposure was spot-on.

Good work and TFS.

Cordialmente... Ricardo

Nice capture starting from the point of view captured with great sharpness in the front part of ophidian Horia.
I like the vertical framing elect in function POV, although the focus depth has been scarce in this case... this model doesn't have manual options?
Interesting post with deserved dedication.
Cordially... Ricardo

Hi Horia,
this is a simple composition and that's best thing about this pic. Nice details and DOF.A low POV might have done wonders, but as you had captured this for study, this POV suits for study. Note is excellant.

Mahesh

Hello Horia !
Wow, awesome picture ! I love snakes but I'm not as brave as you, I wouldn't have gone this close to the snake ! :-) Details, colors, exposure, composition, POV, everything is wonderful. You also caught him with the tongue sticking out, I like it very much. Very well done !
