Ring-billed Gull

The Ring-billed Gull is probably the most abundant gull species in North America. It has increased in numbers since the 1950s, most likely due to the abundance of waste food, scavenged mainly at landfill sites. It breeds at inland lakes across southern Canada and the adjacent USA states. In Alberta, it may be seen anywhere during the warmer months.

Arriving by mid March, the first Ring-bills rest on gravel bars in the Bow River at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary in Calgary. As the ice melts, they spend nights on the waters of Glenmore Reservoir and Elliston Park. Breeding birds soon disperse to their colonies, from Lake Pakowki in the south to Lake Athabasca in the north. In the Calgary region, a significant colony existed at Frank Lake near High River prior to alterations which affected water levels. Some may still be nesting there. Another colony exists(ed?) at Irricana. Non-breeders are regulars in urban areas, perched on light standards, watching for discarded food items. After breeding is completed and the young have dispersed, populations greatly increase locally. At times, 25,000 or more birds gather to roost on the Glenmore Reservoir, until their departure for coastal areas in late November.

Initially, Ring-billed Gulls were dependent on fish and other aquatic species, alive or scavenged along shores, and during summers on insects, particularly grasshoppers, meadow voles, birds' eggs and young. In addition, they now glean leftover human food from fast-food lots, schoolyards and landfill sites. Like other gulls, they readily follow the plow, for upturned insect larvae and worms, and boats for aquatic organisms churned to the surface.

Nesting occurs in dense colonies, often with other gulls, usually on islands. The nest, on the ground, consists of a vegetation, feathers and any available rubbish. Usually three eggs are incubated for about 23 days. The young can swim at an early age. They are fed by both parents until able to fly.

Hello Jeanpaul
Excellent framing of the shot and informative note. Exposure of the whites is very good with little or no blown highlights. I would have liked a little more light on the eye, but no other suggestions.

Another splendid close-up on a bird's head, but this time a splendid pose, too.
The timing here is impeccable and you managed to catch this gull in a great "scream-position" :))
