[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The name of this butterfly is unfortunate as it is rather beautiful, but it derives its name from the somewhat greasy appearance of its semi tranparent forewings.

The Big greasy butterfly (Cressida cressida) is a Paplionid found in most of tropical Australia and it occurs as several sub-species. It is a taxanomic puzzle as its closest relatives are to be found in Argentina.

Like the Apollo butterflies the male deposits a kind of sheath on the female's abdomen, called a sphragis, which acts as a kind of chastity belt preventing other males from mating with her.

While we were looking for the giant Bowerbird's bower at a village school we saw a bottle-brush bush swarming with these butterflies.

I took this shot at a distance of abot 11/2 meters in the late afternoon. We found the bower but the bowerbird could not be photographed to any satisfaction. A shot of this butterfly was a good consolation, though.

Hi Ivan.
What a great beauty you have captured. Amazing specimen and fantastic in its expressiveness POV. Excellent combination of lovely and bright colours. Reproduction of the butterfly is fantastic as well as the image of flowers. I like well moderately blurred leaves as BG and nice blue colour of the sky. Superb expressive work. My compliments and TFS.

Hi Ivan,
You are indeed lucky to find butterflies in abundance as over my way they are quite difficult to find. This is a good consolation for you missing the Bowerbird.I like how you really got down to its level and that reflection of the light on its wing a real bonus.Lovely colour and light!
Regards, David

Hi Ivan. Beautifull. Technically perfect picture. tfs. Stev

Well done, you captured the wings translucency and we can see the BG behind the wings. Nice detail and exposure, well presented.

Greg

"Greasy" is certainly a misnomer in the case of this beautiful butterfly, Ivan.
You have captured this exotic species from a very impressive point of view, offering a comprehensive insight into the colours and textures on both sides of its wings.
The red bottle-brush flowers and the blue sky complement the composition very well.
Warm regards,
Ram

Hi Ivan

Another splendid and rather exotic capture from you!
I really like the POV that you chose here and the angle it gives in order to view the lovley transparency of this beautiful butterfly's wings.
The colors are charming, the DOF is exceptional and the composition very nice.
Perhaps a bit low on the sharpness, but still a charming post.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Ivan, I love her wings - greasy or not!! And the male is very territorial isn't he?? It sounds quite funny to me...
Super capture showing the clearness of the wings, and the composition is good too. TFS

Hello Ivan,
this shot must have been a very good consolation, indeed.
Wonderful pose, marvellous colours, capturing a butterfly from low angle against the sky is often a very awarding approach.
Really astounding to notice the similarity to our European Parnassius butterflies regarding the placement of spots on forewings, and the glassy transparency of wings. Thank you for this very interesting and beatiful contribution!
With best regards,
Peter

Hi Ivan

This is a great macro of a very interesting and lovely butterfly. I’ve never heard of it before so thanks for the introduction. The black colouration of the insect provides a wonderful contrast to the red flowers, the green foliage, and the blue sky. The semi-transparent qualities of the wings are clearly visible.

Well done with the composition. The colours are well saturated, the details are very sharp, and the exposure was spot-on.

Good work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

beautiful photo, great close up , love those wings! TFS
