"LAST TRACES OF WINTER IN CALGARY".

We went to photograph some owls in Edworthy Park in the city of Calgary on 9th. February 2007.

It was a beautiful day. Not too cold. Not sunny either.

We could not see any owls.

So we remembered the tree we had posted in Autumn, "Stunted but BEAUTIFUL"

We decided, instead, to capture the same tree now loaded with snow. And, we agreed that if another "Chinook" came along, all the snow will melt off these BEAUTIFUL trees in Calgary. Another situation is that Winter is almost over in Alberta.

Hence, this evidence: "LAST TRACES OF WINTER IN CALGARY".

Just in case you did not see the tree in its "fall" season please click:

Wow, the comparison between the two seasons is striking. I can't believe that winter is almost over in Calgary. It doesn't feel like it ever really began here. We did have some really cold days but it has been odd. That looks like some sticky snow the way it sticks to every twig. The exposure and sharpness look pretty good. As far as the composition goes, I think I would crop out whatever it is on the lower left.

Hi Aires.
Very nice winter shot with excellent composition, great sharpness and details of the image, perfect exposure and cropping. TFS and best regards.
Alexei.

Did you go across the footbridge from the Shouldice side?
Or drive in from the South?

I know the are well... still hiked from Edsworthy along the Bow to Bowness, , then to Silversprings and finally Dalhousie last summer... :) It didn't look like this!

But Mario, what makes you think this is the end of winter? It's only just begun!

Wunderbar Winterbar! Great B&W scene. Excellent contrast. But would you not like to crop those garbage containers on the left?

Hello Mario,
The trees are so nicely treated by winter!
And winter is the season when colour images look like black and white, at least on days with no sun...
Beautiful textures and fine details!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Mario!
your pov is exactly the same as the autumn capture. Both photos are very beautiful and the comparison makes them unforgettable. Bravo, my friend!
Anton

Hi Mario
these winter scenes are very beautiful indeed and a pleasure to see ...as you know in Portugal climate does not allow this kind of frozen nature!
I think your photo gives pefectly the mood of winter,a marvelous season in northern latitudes...but to cold,I suppose!
um abraço amigo
pedro

Hi Mario
I hope this is the last trace of winter. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
This is a beautiful example of frost. The dark branches really accentuates the white frost. I can never get my fill of this type of frost.
Nicely done!

Hi Aires,
What a majestic appearance, this tree. And covered with snow, it brings out the shapes very well. I had missed the autumnal picture, it looks great also.
Just a little thing, I would have cropped the door(?) on the left side.
Best regards
Anne

Ricardo

A simple and effective monochromatic composition Mario that dramatizes even more the climatic conditions of that region.
I like the framing that you chose in harmony with the captured point of view, except for the object that it appears below to the left... what is this?.
My best regards... Ricardo

Hi Mario,
What, is winter already almost over in Calcary? I think we have to deal with this kind of weather for at least one more month, and I hate it. But if winter was as beautiful as captured here, I wouldn't mind having it for one more month. What an impressive spectacle. That tree looks like magic.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Mario

Wow, what a comparison between the 'autumn' shot and this 'end of winter' shot. This one almost looks like it is done in B&W since it is more-or-less void of any real colour. It is super to see this kind of 'time interval' capture of the same tree. With your winter almost being over, it thankfully means our summer is nearly over as well. I am so much looking forward to winter, because we really had a hot summer with temperatures running well into the +40’sC. Couple to that a 100+% humidity factor and you can understand why I need the winter.

Your composition is fine, but probably you could have cropped the object on the left. The details are great and the exposure was well controlled with so much white in the frame and no OE areas.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
