This photo of a juvenile Southern Pale Chanting Goshawk was taken on a recent trip to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.
The Southern Pale Chanting Goshawk is quite common throughout the arid regions of Botswana, however further north the Dark Chanting Goshawk becomes more common. Where the ranges of these two birds overlap it is quite difficult to distinguish between them in the field. The Dark Chanting Goshawk is slightly smaller, a bit darker and has a finely barred white rump as opposed to the white rump of the Southern Pale Chanting Goshawk. In flight the primary wing feathers are darker on the Dark Chanting Goshawk.
This was the first trip I did using my new EOS 400D (after my 300D packed at around 20,000 acctuations) and I was really impressed with its performance. I have included a short camera review on my website.
I took the photo from the car (one of the best hides you can have!) using a bean bag on the window for support.
