Heath Fritillary - Melitaea athalia

This is the most common Fritillary in Sweden and there are more variations of this Fritillary than any other species. Its size and markings can vary considerably from dark brown to orange and from brightly marked to almost plain and it is therefore difficult to identify. Here in the south it has a wingspan of 35-48 mm while further north it is about 32-42 mm. The female is often larger than the male and her markings are often more variable.

The two above are both females and the one on the left is most common while the one on the right is an aberration.

The Heath Fritillary here in the south is found in sandy-soil areas near woods and in clearings with plenty of flowers. As we live right at the edge of a pine wood we get plenty of them coming to our garden.

The larvae feed on Plantago, Melampyrum or Veronica. They are black with small, raised, white and pale green spots. The flight time in in Sweden is from mid June to end August.

It is a widespread and often abundant butterfly in continental Europe except for in the UK where it is protected, but in many countries it has declined.

Hi Ulla
Rely great photos. Both images are perfect. But it is not the most important thing here. Great presentation of melanic form and "typical" specimen. I like the idea very much

Hello Ulla,
you show two superb pictures of this fritillary, nicely demonstrating the variability of the species' wing patterns. Focus and sharpness for both butterflies are pretty good. Colours are natural and sunlight is well managed.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Ulla,
Excellent idea to show us this so different butterflies of the same species. It is just amazing. I'm happy to see them on my screen, because in the books it is so tyring to look out fort dots and stripes. I have many different fritillaries in summer in front of my chalet and I just cannot identify them. It is so difficult.
So thank's a lot.
Best regards
Anne

Hi Ulla, once more.
I like your two ("yellow" and "green") shots so much. Excellent composition (collage) and amazing colours. Pose of butterflies, their details are fantastic in their exactness and expressiveness. My compliments and TFS. Perfect done.
Alexei.

Wow, what an attractive collage of these two beauties, Ulla!
Both of them are brilliantly captured against pleasant backgrounds of yellow and green.
I may be wrong but I feel that in a smaller image, the colours and sharpness come out much better.
A real treat to the eyes, Ulla.
Thanks and take care.

Hello Ulla
I am really impressed. How do you know that they are the same species? It is so difficult to identify them when they vary so much!
A really excellent job!
My compliments and thank you very much for sharing.

Hi Ulla

This is a lovely compilation of the heath fritillary showing the beautiful butterfly from 2 different vantage points.

Both shots were captured with great compositions and POV's. The colours are stunning, the DOF was spot-on ensuring splendid details on each shot, and the exposures were well controlled. Although the BG's are very close to the subjects it were not rendered OOF, but both are rather complimentary and enhanced the insects very well.

Good work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hello Ulla,
Very nice idea to show intraspecific polymorphism in butterflies. That's why it's not so easy to identify insect based on photographs. If don't know them well then you are in trouble. Apparently you weren't :-)
Thanks for this well thought and interesting contribution!
Best greetings,
Michal

Hi Ulla,
