I made a second layer only consisting of the bird (select the bird with magic wand etc., then do new layer/copy) then went back and reduced the brightness of the background by about 50% and increased the contrast a little

I made a second layer of the sky, using the magic wand tool, which picked up the sky very cleanly since it was almost white, then selected a blue tone and used the paint bucket tool to fill in the sky. You could get more creative and overlay a sky with clouds, also, for example, but my goal was to emphasize the reds, not make the sky too interesting.

I tried to make the bird's beak stand out more against the dark background. I made two additional layers - one just for the beak, so I could keep its natural color and contrast, and a new layer by selecting everything to the right of the bird and branch. Then I increased the brightness, reduced the contrast, and used the noise reduction filter to eliminate noise and color artifacts. I used PSE 3.0.

I reduced the blue in the picture to remove the blue cast on the heron.

As I said, I rather like the original, but thought I'd run a workshup to show you an alternative. I create two new layers, for the blue and for the yellow flowers and adjusted brightness, contrast and levels in each. Selecting the blues and the yellows was very easy using the magic wand tool with a tolerance of 40, since they are so distinct in this image that with a few clicks I captured them. Then worked on each layer as explained to reduce brightness, contrast, and adjust levels.

Greg:

I took this lovely view and increased contrast and reduced brighness to make the colors a little richer and more vivid. Hope you like it.

I passed your picture through NeatImage, set to filter and sharpen, and also cloned out a lot of dust spots. Its an interesting picture that looks better without the digitizing noise.

The original has a strong blue cast, and the histogram is essentially empty towards the right hand side. I corrected for the histogram and color cast to get, I think, a more natural color for the feathers of mother and cygnet.

I simply cropped this to emphasize the main part of the picture - the stonechat - and eliminate the blank area around it. The image is a little overshaprened in the original, however, and this shows up more in the workshop.
