 shadows/highlights and sharpening | AndrewWallis
(246) [2006-08-05 07:54:51] [2] | | In the photoshop CS2 shadows/highlights tool, I reduced the highlights to increase saturation and increased the shadows to increase the brightness of the picture. I also added a slight change in curves (fixed the shadows as they were and then pulled up the midtones a little - I find this helps the image pop out a bit more). I then added a small amount of sharpening with the smart sharpening tool. |

levels multiply and shadow/highlights | AndrewWallis
(246) [2006-08-04 20:38:32] [5] | There was nothing wrong with the original version. This was simply an experiment to see how different one photo can look with different techniques.
I selected the sky (a relatively easy way to do this is to select a colour range and adjust the tolerance to determine how wide a range is selected), copied it to a new layer and selected the "multiply" blending option. This has the effect of intensifying the sky. The effect can be fine tuned by adjusting the opacity of the new layer.
I then brought down the highlights further (on the flattened image) which has quite a saturating effect on colours (personally I think it works better than the saturation tool for this). I then increased the shadows slider to brighten up the image. |

healing brush and contrast adjustments | AndrewWallis
(246) [2006-08-02 20:08:25] [1] | | I've used the healing brush to remove the backscatter in the background of the photo. This is caused by light reflecting directly back into the camera off silt particles in the water and is a common problem in underwater photography. I've also made some minor contrast adjustments with the shadows and highlights tool. |

 contrast and sharpening | AndrewWallis
(246) [2006-08-02 19:42:27] [2] | | I've adjusted the contrast a little with the photoshop shadows/highlights slider (basically toned down the highlights and added a little bit of shadow detail). I've then sharpened the whole photo a small amount and on a separate layer I sharpened the head by a larger amount. The reason I did this is because sharpening the whole photo by this amount would have ruined the texture of the scales on the body. |

shadows/highlights, crop and sharpen | AndrewWallis
(246) [2006-07-11 14:12:37] [4] | Hi Steve,
I used the shadows/highlights tool on Photoshop CS2 and adjusted shadows 50% and highlights 4%. I also cropped it (though this is subjective as to whether or not it is an improvement) and sharpened it a little.
Generally when I use the shadows tool I rarely adjust by more than 5 but this was quite underexposed. |
