 numerical approach | Art_R
(1995) [2008-08-31 12:23:41] | this is a second effort with this photo set , this time instead of attempting to make 'by eye' levels adjustments , I chose to make equal numerical adjustments to each image and mask. the resulting image was considerably darker , but I think this effect falls onto the area of camera man error :-*)
I think that with the initial image instead of letting the camera choose its exposure that I should have imposed a positive exposure of likely around a 2/3 stop
I edited the compiled image in photoshop to apply some lightness/shadows correction to offset the darkness.
I think that this more numerical approach built a far nicer and colorful image.

(1995) [2008-08-31 09:52:21] | this is the original image with no exposure compinsation , along with befor and after histograms for the two photos , the before clearly shows the amount of darkness and clipping in the light areas , the after is much better but also still has issues in the light area , that is likely resulting from my trying to lighten the image too much . but I am not positive , it will take a lot of practice and learning for me to fully understand how to blend the images well.

(1995) [2008-08-25 21:53:09] [2] | hi Denis, your image shows a common problem in its exposure , a flower with a background of sky with clouds , an impossible scene to expose correctly. one solution is to expose for the sky , and deal with the rest in software.
I used the GIMP for my workshop . opening your photo I created a copy layer , the top layer I left as is but reduced its opacity to 0 so that I could only see the bottom layer.on the bottom I used levels to adjust the black input and white output , essentially changed the black and white points for the photo to increase its lightness while retaining contrast , my entire attention here was the brightness and color of the flower. once satisfied with the color of the flower I return to the top layer and set its opacity back to 100% , this returns the photo to original but the brighter layer is still underneath. using the eraser tool I then erased the areas of the flower from the top layer , one of the feathered edged brushes works best , I erased the flower off of the darker upper layer revealing the lower brighter layer , this left the already bright sky the way it is , and brings up the brightness of the flower alone. I then flattened the image and saved it as a jpeg . this technique can be used with bracketed exposures or multiple processing of a single raw file by adding exposure compensation.
I hope that you find this useful

 actual pixels | Art_R
(1995) [2008-07-08 08:56:32] | Hi this is an actual pixels sample of the photo , it was shot with settings ,
jpeg- fine
size medium (5-6 mega pixel)
high ISO noise reduction - normal
there is not much else for image settings with the jpeg format
though this represents a very small level of noise for a 1600 iso , it is good to consider how much noise would be consumed by a 40% reduction in resolution , I am not that handy with RAW conversion and woulkd strugle with an iso 1600 , but no doubt the raw has higher potential.

 frame | Art_R
(1995) [2008-07-02 23:26:34] [2] | Hi Carlos , all that I did was to add a white border to the inside edge of your frame , the only reason I suggest this for your frame is that it is a goal of a frame to contain the picture , but the way the shadow dissolved into the frame acted to release the image into the frame , I found myself looking to the bottom right corner trying to see the border between image and frame instead of looking at this nice image. really just a small distraction , and a small detail.
I hope that it is to your liking.
