 Noise reduction, cloning | CaptiveLight
(947) [2007-05-21 19:07:02] [1] | Using Photoshop CS2
Just cloned out the areas above the bird where some PS marks were visible, then added some dark patches using the dodge tool set to 5% Shadow. Ran the whole image through Neat Image, then selected individual areas using the Quick Mask mode, before going back to normal mode, inverting the selection and adding in a slight gaussian blur at 5% to smooth out remaining colour noise. |

 Layers/Curves/Erase | CaptiveLight
(947) [2006-12-07 02:48:45] [5] | Image opened in Photoshop.
Duplicate layer made, working on bottom layer open Curves window and mid tones increased to brighten up the bird's body.
Select top layer, and erased over the white areas of the bird with a soft eraser brush at 50% opacity to show the lighter version underneath in these areas.
20% eraser brush swiped over the snow in the background to just to make them a little less grey.
Total time 1.5 mins |

 Layers/Curves/Erase | CaptiveLight
(947) [2006-12-07 02:34:01] [4] | Opened in Photoshop.
Duplicate layer made, working on bottom layer, open "curves" window, drag up mid point to brighten the grey snow area. When area is bright enough, saturation taken down by some 50% as there was a blue tone reflection off the sky.
Select top layer, and using a soft edged eraser brush at 40% opacity foreground area of grey snow erased to show the layer underneath.
Little bit of top layer erased across distant mountains at 25% opacity
2 Layers flattened into one and saved ...
Time... about 2 minutes. |

 Colours | CaptiveLight
(947) [2006-07-12 14:26:24] [2] | | Couldn't help feeling that the original looked a little cool and washed out. Just added some 10% saturation, 10% contrast, -2% brightness and a 25% 85 warming filter to perk it up a little... total time in Photoshop, less than a minute. |

High Pass Filter Sharpening | CaptiveLight
(947) [2006-03-21 07:17:21] [5] | Same sort of thing, just using High Pass Filter Sharpening and layers. I usually find that HPF sharpening gives a good texture to fur, but you have to be careful not to over do it.
Method. Create duplicate layer, erase that layer around the border and signature to preserve them as they are. Next create a duplicate of the new layer, and apply High Pass Filter at 0.7 pix using vivid light. Flatten image.
Hope you don't mind.

 Photoshop | CaptiveLight
(947) [2005-08-26 02:30:59] [10] | Created a layer copy, played with "levels" on bottom layer for the head, top layer for the rest of the image, and combined the two by erasing the parts of the top layer over the head with a soft brush to allow the bottom layer to show through. Flattened image, made another copy and high pass filtered that to sharpen it. Selected beak/head area and added a touch of USM sharpening to only the selected areas. Flattened Image. Finally cloned out the white speckles, cut off the frame and added simple key-line and border.
Hope you don't mind! |

 Levels | CaptiveLight
(947) [2005-05-13 02:17:35] [8] | I thought the original was a little dark and flat, so I brightened it up using "Levels", and added a warm-up filter layer. Added 10% saturation, then ran image through Neat Image (didn't realise til after it had already been through). Cloned out the odd sparkle that looked out of place, then made a duplicate copy and High Pass sharpened it a little, 0.4 radius on Vivid light I think... This gave me the finished image. Added a border just to set it off... it's a personal thing... Then resized it to 800 pix at 72 Dpi for web use. I noticed you saved it at 175 DPI, you'll probably find that 72 DPI is fine for web display, and will give you smaller file sizes.
Thanks for allowing workshops on such a lovely little picture... |

 Sharpened and Levels | CaptiveLight
(947) [2005-05-01 05:50:16] [1] | All I've done is sharpen this again by 0.4 Vivid, maybe 0.3 would have been enough, and increased the highlights and mid tones using "levels". Selected the ring around the eye and gave that a quick USM sharpen on it's own.
Oh, and lightened the beak a little just to bring it out of the shadows. |

 Sharpened | CaptiveLight
(947) [2005-04-28 11:06:05] [3] | | Firstly made a duplicate layer and sharpened using High Pass Sharpening, flattened images into one. Another duplicate layer which was run through Neat Image, top layer erased over the bird to reveal the original sharp layer underneath. Flattened and saved. A few minor burned out highlights cloned or dodged to repair them. Saved for web. |
