Intro: Hi folks I'm Steve,
(My nickname,Lord Potty, was the stage name I used when I was a stand up comedian in Christchurch in the 1980's)
I have been a member of Trek Nature since a couple of months after it began.
When I first began posting on TN,I lived at Pirongia,in the Waikato region of the North Island of New Zealand.
Most of my photographs then were taken in Pirongia National park,a forest reserve on the beautiful extinct volcano,Mount Pirongia, southwest of Hamilton.
Then I moved to Punakaiki,a tiny coastal settlement on the West Coast of the South Island.
This is a place where the mountains and rainforest come right down to the sea.
There is sometimes snow on the hills nearby, and yet the coast rarely gets a frost. The climate there is almost subtropical and the coastal forests are full of Nikau Palms.
The area is mainly limestone, and crystal clear rivers with sparking quartz and mica beds wind through spectacular limestone gorges and through numerous caves.
Punakaiki is the location of the famous Pancake Rocks and Blowholes, and is home to some fascinating species, such as Hectors Dolphins,Little Blue Penguins and the rare Westland Black Petrel. The rainforest here is as dense and luxuriant as any of the worlds thickest jungles, due to the high rainfall and warm climate.
Moss and lichen grow thick and green here, and little native spider orchids are everywhere.
I delight in getting way off the beaten track, and getting down and dirty, finding those elusive little treasures of nature that most people never get to see. You'll find macro photos here of fungi and orchids which have not even yet been classified.I hope you enjoy them.
Now I am living in Greymouth,a West Coast seaport, mining and fishing town about 30 minutes drive south of Punakaiki.
Most of my photos from now on will be taken around the coastal and alpine areas of Westland.
I hope you'll continue to enjoy New Zealands wilderness through my pics.
