Hi Tom,
This workshop isn't ideal,due to the resolution (and my limited editing skills) but just an example of how the image might be cropped for impact.As you can see,some bark detail and leaf has been cropped from the right too.(Although I don't mind them personally,the 'official' line would be that they are a distraction)
I wasn't sure whether or not to apply sharpening again after cropping.I did in the end,but think it almost looks oversharpened now.
It gives you an idea of the sort of thing you can do anyway.

Using Irfanview,I have increased the contrast a little,reduced the blue slightly and sharpened a bit.

Irfanview/Digital image Pro

Using Microsoft Digital Image Pro I isolated and darkened some areas of the post,then using Irfanview cropped and sharpened.

Using Irfanview I have reduced the blue element to -44
Then I have reduced gamma correction slightly to about 90 and sharpened.
Hopefully you will see more and sharper detail and less UV light distortion.

Using Irfanviews 'enhance colours' menu,I have reduced the blue very slightly (-8) then reduced gamma correction (to 90) and sharpened.
