| Intro: | I'm Vinny and I'm based in Dorset on the South Coast of England. I've loved natural history all my life. I guess I'm something of a biophile as there isn't much that I don't have an interest in. My personal opinion of humans and the environment can best be summed up as cynical but realistic - we need to improve the global situation: we all want more, but there's more of us than ever before and therefore less to go around. We need to reduce our numbers so that we, and the generations that follow us have something worth living for. If you think we are immune to habitat destruction, pull your head out of your backside, go back to school and learn the facts! I worked in various sections of the horticultural trade for 18 years, and this gave me a fair amount of plant knowledge and recognition. I left when I realised that the majority of modern gardening techniques do more harm than good - paving, shingle, decking, non-native plants that have very little or no benefit to native fauna. I now work in the thoroughly uninteresting world of health insurance, but it pays for the camera equipment and the holiday allowance is generous! I have been taking digital photographs since 1998, my first camera being a Sony Mavica which took floppy discs! I bought a Canon Powershot G1 in 2001 before moving on to DSLR in 2005 with a Canon 300D Rebel. I now have a Canon 400D Rebel XTi and have taken over 30,000 shots in 18 months. I'm accompanied on most of my photographic forays by my trusty, equipment carrying 'mule' Emily, who also doubles as my wife! ;p Although nature and photography take up most of my spare time, I also enjoy gaming (Burnout, Halo, Doom and GTA amongst my most played). I read quite a bit, mainly sci-fi/fantasy by authors such as Terry Pratchett, Robert Rankin and Iain M Banks. I love a wide range of music (Depeche Mode, Chemical Brothers, Madness, Fun Lovin' Criminals, Tom Petty to name but a few). My claim to fame is that I was part of the 'Razer' team in the UK television series 'Robot Wars'. For those of you unfamiliar with the concept of robotic combat, you can see a clip of one of our televised fights here. We won Series 5, two World Championships and three best design awards. We also appeared on 'Battlebots' in the US. I retired from robotic combat in 2002. Important note having seen how arbitrary the 'pointing' system can be on TN, I have turned my smilies off. I am happy to comment on your pictures in an honest fashion and I appreciate constructive criticism that helps me improve my photography. However, if you are a points junkie don't waste your smilies on me - I can't see them and you won't get any in return- sorry! ;) I have a website with a range my pictures at http://www.vincentblood.com | |
