This WS was accomplished with Photoshop CS3 but any image processing software can do this.
1. Duplicate Background (ctrl+J) and clean up dust and debris.
2. Using a Curves adjustment layer I placed a point of the center of the curve a pulled up significantly to brighten the Swan without loosing details. Press OK.
3. I noticed that after brightening the head and beak area were still a bit under exposed.
4. Open another curves adjustment layer and mouse over the head and beak area to see the location on the curve. Set a point on the curve where the head and beak are found.
5. Pull the point straight up until the head and beak look OK. IGNORE the rest of the image as we will fix that in a minute. When the head and beak are where you think they should be press OK.
6. Fill the Curves mask with black. This takes away the correction for the head.
7. Select a medium sized soft edged brush with an opacity of about 30%. Make sure white is the FG color. Paint on the mask over the head and beak area until you reveal an exposure that looks good.
8. Flatten and save.
