|Intro:||I remember a hundred lovely lakes, and recall the fragrant breath of pine and fir and cedar and poplar trees. The trail has strung upon it, as upon a thread of silk, opalescent dawns and saffron sunsets. It has given me blessed release from care and worry and the troubled thinking of our modern day. It has been a return to the primitive and the peaceful. Whenever the pressure of our complex city life thins my blood and benumbs my brain, I seek relief in the trail; and when I hear the coyote wailing to the yellow dawn, my cares fall from me - I am happy. |
Hamlin Garland, McClure's, February 1899
I find it fascinating that this remedy still works after more than a century. I have to wonder what the writer would have to say of today’s modern times, when a man that wanders in the forest may be called a loafer, but when he cuts down trees in the wilderness and in the process makes money he will be referred to as an entrepreneur.
It is no mystery why the only true wilderness left on our planet is those that are uninhabitable to man, the great deserts and ice caps of the countries in the Polar Regions. No mystery then why most of the larger terrestrial species only survive in protected areas. Man has left quite a footprint on this planet. In the last 30 years:
• 555 species of mammals, birds, and reptiles living in terrestrial ecosystems,
• 323 vertebrate species found in rivers, lakes, and wetland ecosystems,
• 267 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish occurring in the world’s ocean and coastal ecosystems, have gone extinct.
I have disabled the points system so please do not waste your smileys on me. A comment would be welcome. :)
