(661) [2008-03-09 12:53:06] [1] | | I did an auto-levels adjustment in The Gimp, followed by one pass of Unsharp Mask (Radius 1.5, Amount 0.5, Threshold 0), an auto-Color Enhance, and a final pass of simple sharpening (10). I also saved to the maximum file size, about double that of the original post. The Gimp is free software that can be downloaded from www.gimp.org |

Cropping, Mild USM, Levels | jpinkham
(661) [2007-11-22 20:04:34] [1] | Hi, Tony --
Here's what I had in mind. PP here is chiefly the tighter crop. Ran USM also with a radius of 1.0 and an amount of 0.35, then did a very slight levels correct to compensate for the lightening effect of the sharpening. I also noticed you used only 66K in file size for your original. This version is just over 160K -- I always try to use as many pixels as I can without going over the 204K threshold. |

(661) [2007-11-03 17:35:49] | Ang, I ran this through my fairly typical two-pass sharpening regimen. First, I ran the Sharpen (Smart Redux) plug-in from the free photo-editing program, The Gimp. Second, I ran Unsharp Mask at Radius 1.5, Amount 0.5 and Threshold 1. Then I sized at the maximum possible beneath the 200K limit. Hope you like the outcome.
Best regards,
Jim |

(661) [2007-10-07 20:13:23] [1] | | Hi, Trevor -- I sharpened this for you in two passes, using the free photo-editing program, The Gimp. The first was with the Sharpen/Smart Redux plug-in (setting 2.00 for USM radius and 1.00 for amount). The second was the regular USM off the Filter-Enhance menu (which I normally do after final sizing), with a radius of 1.2 and an amount of 0.40. Technical explanations for this can be lengthy, but to keep it short, your camera doesn't always render the images it captures with realistic sharpness. A good sharpening regimen can salvage a great deal. |
