Particularly the parts that should be black (pupil) seem dark brown on my monitor (if you have your monitor optimised for text, you may have a very high contrast value and this will not be noticeable).

Also generally the contrast seems a bit low, though this is very much depending on taste.

I added contrast and at the same time readjusted black and white point via curves in PS as follows:

1. Convert from rgb to lab mode to change lightness channel only (if you add contrast in rgb, you will at the same time add saturation!)

2. Adjust the linear "curve" into a S-shaped curve. This makes the dark areas darker and the light areas lighter.

3. Convert from lab to rgb

4. I needed to compress the file somewhat to bring it under 200 KB again

That's it.

Hope you like this variation of your great picture!

Sharpened with FocusFixer (FixerLabs).
This is a new (for me, that is) sharpening method I tried out.
I usually use noise reduction in combination with sharpening via Neatimage, then resize and sharpen for internet publishing via Photoshop's USM (unsharpmask). A problem with USM is that you loose a bit of detail.
FocusFixer is supposed to have an algorithm that allows it to keep the detail in off-focus situations, as it detects the blurred spots that really should be points and calculates them back somehow. Whether this makes sense, I really don't know. But in some situations, in particular where the focus is off (and NOT including motion blurr!), it is a good alternative to USM.

Livio, you mentioned blue sky ... here is how I faked some for you:
I used PS CS for PP. Roughly selected the bird with the lasso tool, inversed the selection and thereby selected the sky around the bird.
Adjust ->Photofilter. Applied a combination of Bluefilter (25%) and then Deep Blue Filter (25%).
Large % will make the fake obvious, a combi of at least two filters will also add some realism.
Hope you like, even though this is not the "pure nature" state.

Gabi

Great closeup, but the beak is a wee bit soft, so I tried out if a bit of selective sharpening might help. I used PS CS for postprocessing.
Selected area of beak, top of head and foreground-feathers bottom right with lasso tool. Applied sharpening with USM, 0.3 (resolution is+was 72 dpi) at 200%.
Finished with selective colour burn (selected area in the beak - simply select burn tool and paint over the lines) to make them stand out more.

Good shot, but very soft. I sharpened it using first NeatImage to reduce the noise before further sharpening, to avoid sharpening/increasing the noise.
Then used USM (unsharpmask) to add some more sharpness in PS CS.

Some basic post processing for illustration:
- Cropped to focus on the subject
- levels adjusted (black and white redefined)
- removed slight cyan cast
- sharpened with USM (unsharpmask)
- added frame via "canvas size" (needs three steps for a frame like this, one for each colour border)
Resolution in the resulting image is not adequate due to crop, as the original had 72 ppi.

Result hopefully focuses on the subject without disregarding the habitat, at least that was the plan. Hope you like it.

Gabi

Just a variant of presentation with the inner frame blurred and lightened by hand via PS CS blurr tool (first blurred in normal mode, then switched blurr tool to lighten). Without the clear borders the two pics merge more, which may or may not be useful, depending on what you want to achieve.

Lovely pose you captured, but not easy to save due to lack of sharpness/missing detail.
So at cost of photorealistic look, I ran it through NeatImage to reduce noise and sharpen, used USM to sharpen some more, added some contrast (esp. middle and low tones) via curves, changed crop to use the nice swirl with the female duck at the endpoint for composition.
Hope you like this variation of your picture. You capture a very nice scene, well spotted.
Kind regards,
Gabi
