An alternate crop gets rid of the OOF branch in the FF while still showing most of the subjects. Clear focus of the image is the cutie top right, now placed near a "Rule of Thirds" position. Compos arranged on the diagonals similarly to previous post.

The colours seemed to have a grey tinge and it was a bit soft overall, so I adjusted things in PS CS as follows:

- used curves to brighten especially the highlight oart of the curve
- used curves pulling curve in the middle into direction of an overall brighter image
- increased saturation +10
- sharpened with US radius 0.6 (image was 300 ppi abd I left it at that resolution), 180%

Hope you like this variation.

Kind regards,
Gabi

A very good shot of this dragon fly, subject nicely isolated from BG and at large f/stop large DOF and good sharpness.

At larger f/stops however, sensor dust gets very noticeable, especially when there is an even light-coloured BG as here.

The blurred dots you see in the BG are typical for dust on the sensor, and if they occur only at large f/stop but not at e.g. f/8, you know the culprit for sure.

Now it is possible to remove dust from the camera, but it is a lot of tricky work, and it will eventually return anyway.

As it is noticeable only in certain shots (often blue sky or blurred BG as here), it is much easier to simply use clone-stamp, select a bit of neighbouring colour of similar lightness, and clone it over. Result as shown.

Gabi

A colourful capture in good pose, I also like the composition that uses the diagonals, but the photo is noticably OOF (out of focus).

As quite a bit of sharpening is required, noise is reduced first in NeatImage and at the same NI performs a first sharpening step. Simply used the automatic function, except left out the "conservative", as this needs a bit more sharpness.

Follow up with USM ("unsharpmask" - meaning by masking unsharp areas it sharpens) radius 0.5.

Done with PS CS with NeatImage plug-in.

Gabi

Hi ManYee,
great colourful capture, pity about the two cropped off tentacles, so I used clone-stamp to reconstitute the missing tips from neighboring tentacles (in imitation of nature, as in some tentacled organims these things can regrow after amputation ;-)).
Due to the nice frame already present, this automatically created an "out of bounds" (OOB) effect at the same time.
Hope you like it!

A wonderful landscape Stephen, you created a high visual impact. I personally prefer lots of contrast, so here is a variant of your great capture.

More contrast through curves (PS CS):
Go to curves, curve before change is a diagonal.
Go to the left side and introduce a tiny stretch of curve that runs horizontally. This will darken the deep tones.
Go to right side and again introduce a tiny stretch where the curve runs horizontally. This will increase the lights.
Overall effect is more contrast.
Alternatively, to add even more contrast, change the diagonal to an S-shaped curve similar to the more abrupt shape I desribed above. This however would be too much contrast for this picture.

Hi Athila, just an experiment how it looks with more "umph" to the colours: Added 20% saturation, adjusted colour balance: added reds, especially to shadows. Used PS CS for editing.

Hi ManYee,
just an alternative composition. I tried to focus on the regular branching points so I aligned the stem in the diagonal of a square.

I thought compo could be improved so here is what I tried and why: Not much happening on the left side and the remainder of the branch at the top is centrally placed and draws the eye too much for my taste.
Cropped to provide a more balanced composition that clearly puts the focus on the bird, in particular the head. The remainder of the branch is placed near the frame in a less prominent position so it serves more as a pointer to the head than away from it.

Gabi

I thought a bit more contrast would add more drama.
Tried to simply up the contrast, but it did not have the desired result.
Then I remembered some previous advice on TN (Gert, thank you!):
1. Convert to lab mode
2. Work on the b+w/luminosity channel only (select and change only this one)
3. Use shadow/highlight tool and fiddle the sliders around until the right degree of drama is reached.
I used PS CS. Hope you like my little experiment with your great capture.

Gabi
