To bring out the texture of the tree bark in these difficult lighting conditions (backlit by the sun with the fron in shadow), I lightened the shadows and darkened the highlights with the shadow/highlight tool of PS CS. Hope you like this variation of Luk's great picture.

Hello Marlis,
I very much like the composition so I played around a bit to bring out the flowers versus background a bit more. I used NeatImage to reduce the noise apparent in the BG, and at the same time sharpened a bit (the stems were a wee bit soft). Then I tried to increase saturation, but was not quite happy with the result. I went on and selectively changed colour by giving the shadows (BG) more blue, and the highlights (flowerpetals) more yellow (never used this function before, so I learned something new today). File size had increased by then so I had to copmress slightly. Hope you like the variation on your great picture!

Gabi

Hi Stephen,
hope you don't hate b+w with a passion ...
Converted to lab mode, added adjustment layer, desaturated, re-converted to grayscale mode. Adjusted levels (redefined black and white points) and contrast. Slightly compressed since the size had increased over the limit. I used PS CS.

Hi Scott,
I used NeatImage to sharpen and reduce noise (not much noise), then increased saturation +10 in PS CS. Hope you like it.

This is the original uncropped version "fresh" as it came out of the camera. Unfortunately I had not yet started taking pictures in RAW yet, so it was JPG format and has the compression issues which can be in the way when you need to do some more PP.
As you can see the light came at an angle from behind with the bottom part of the eye on the right in shadows.

Hi Manyee, here is the next one!
Reduced Noise with Neat Image on auto and sharpened (also with NI).
NeatImage is free as demo only (download from website, I believe also for Mac). The demo version has several downsides, first and foremost you are limited to very small highly compressed files as output. So it to familiarise with how it works and what it can do and that's basically it. They have clever business managers, apparently.
Have a very nice week-end,
Gabi

Hi Manyee, sorry about the late reply to your note, only read it today!
Reduced noise and sharpened with NeatImage. Auto didn't find a homogeneous area to analyse, adjusted manually and proceeded anyway. A larger version of source image (if this is cropped?) would probably help. File size after NI was doubled, so had to compress a bit again. Still, the image looks much smoother, which I think is more important than keeping all the detail when its jellyfish or other smooth surface rather than fur/feather. If you would like me to try again with a larger file and/or larger crop, just send me an email with the file.

Gabi

Here is a compo variation, creating a wavy line running from top left to bottom right. Let me know what you think!

Reduced noise with Neat Image, it now looks smoother. On auto settings JPG artifacts will come out, so I set noise levels "high" on +90% in noise filter settings to get rid of the rod-shaped artifacts. With feathers or fur the result is sometimes a bit of a plastic look due to inevitable loss of some detail, but with jellyfish this is not as noticeable, so I reduced noise on high settings. Hope you like it.
Cheers,
Gabi

Hi Paul, I'm only starting on PS, so it's far from perfect. What I mainly wanted to achieve was with the shadow/highlight tool which I only recently discovered to bring out the area of main interest, the face and eye, which I found rather dark. This brought some other problems as you see, and fiddling around could not get rid of the halo/shadow effectaround the subject. Maybe someone knows how to do it better?
Cheers,
Gabi
