Hi Rick

Thanks for allowing workshops to be posted.

I merely wanted to address the slight darkness on the photo as the rest are pretty neat. For that I only used the "Shadow/Highlight" tool and no other adjustments were made.

Post Processing done:
1. Selected the "Shadow/Highlight" tool and adjusted the following settings.
Shadows:
Amount = 50%
Tonal width = 50%
Radius = 30px
Highlights:
Amount = 0%
Tonal width = 50%
Radius = 30px
Adjustments:
Colour correction = +20
Midtone contrast = 0
2. Selected "Save for Web" and since the original file downloaded to 96kB I increased the quality so the file saved at 189kB.

Hope you approve of the optimisation.

Best regards
Loot

Hi Rick

I've done a slight enhancement to bump up the colour saturation and also the sharpness and to remove the slight smokiness on the photo.

Post Processing done:
1. Adjusted "Levels" on the "Histogram" by increasing the "Input Levels" of the "Black" slider (at 21), the "White" slider (at 225), and balancing the "Mid-tones" slider to darken the image (at 0.85).
2. Increased the "Contrast" +4.
3. Decreased the "Brightness" -2.
4. "Saturation" +8.
5. Selected the pronghorn with the "Magic Wand" and "Lasso" tools.
6. Adjusted "USM" at 150% amount, 0.3 radius, and 0.0 threshold.
7. Deselected all, selected "Save for Web", and adjusted the "Quality" upwards from the original downloaded size of 70kB to 194kB.

Thanks for allowing workshops to be posted. I hope you approve of the result.

Hi Reina

As I said, just a slight enhancement done to spice up the colour and also the brightness.

Post Processing done:
1. Minor adjustment of the "Levels" on the "Histogram" by increasing the "Input Levels" of the "Black" slider (at 11) and the "White" slider to (at 0.211).
2. Increased the "Contrast" +4.
3. Increased the "Brightness" +14.
4. "Saturation" +17.
5. Adjusted "USM" at 250% amount, 0.3 radius, and 0.0 threshold.
6. Selected "Save for Web", and adjusted the "Quality" upwards to 197kB.

Thanks for allowing workshops to be posted. I hope you approve of the result.

Hi Fred

I did a slight optimisation to eliminate the smokiness on the photo and bump up the saturation a bit.

Post Processing done:
1. Minor adjustment of the "Levels" on the "Histogram" by increasing the "Input Levels" of the "Black" slider (at 7) and balancing the "Mid-tones" slider to darken the image (at 0.97).
2. Selected the background with the "Magic Wand" and "Lasso" tools.
3. Applied "Neat Image" at its default settings just to touch up a wee bit of noise in the BG. (Could be just my monitor showing it.)
4. Inversed the selection so that only the flower was active.
5. Adjusted the "Levels" some more on the "Histogram" by increasing the "Input Levels" of the "Black" slider (at 7) and balancing the "Mid-tones" slider to darken the image still further (at 0.97).
6. "Saturation" +5.
7. "Deselected" all and with the "Magic Wand" I selected only a small area at the centre of the lip.
8. Reduced the "Brightness" -4.
9. Once again "Deselected" all.
10. Added "Magenta" with "Variations" and the slider set to "Fine".
11. Adjusted "USM" at 250% amount, 0.3 radius, and 0.0 threshold.
12. Selected "Save for Web", and adjusted the "Quality" upwards to 195kB.

The result probably show a little more of the beautiful crystal like textures on the lip. Thanks for allowing workshops to be posted and I hope you like it.

Hi Dr. Sukumaran

I made some adjustments to try and spice up the photo a bit. Although you have provided a good base photo I was of the impression that the colours and contrasts could benefit from a bit of PP work. I hope you like the result.

Work done:
1. Cropped a bit off the bottom with the "Crop Tool.
2. Selected the background with the "Magic Wand" and "Lasso" tools.
3. Adjusted "Levels" on the "Histogram" by increasing the "Input Levels" of the "Black" slider (at 24), the "White" slider (at 236), and balancing the "Mid-tones" slider to darken the image (at 0.86).
4. Applied "Neat Image" at its default settings.
5. Inversed selection so that only the bird and the post was selected.
6. Adjusted "Levels" on the "Histogram" by increasing the "Input Levels" of the "Black" slider (at 17), the "White" slider (at 222), and balancing the "Mid-tones" slider to darken the image (at 0.90).
7. "Contrast" +7.
8. "Saturation" +5.
9. Used the "Brush Tool" at 30% "Opacity" (black) to darken the upper mandible.
10. Increase the "Canvas Size" with 0.3cm and imitated the black border at the cropped area at the bottom.
11. Adjusted "USM" at 150% amount, 0.3 radius, and 0.0 threshold.
12. Selected "Save for Web", and adjusted the "Quality" upwards to 111kB.

Since the original downloaded file was only 33kB PhotoShop would only allow me to save the new file to 111kB with the maximum quality set at 100%.

Best regards

Hi Smitha

I started playing with another workshop and tried to push the envelope a bit further just to see how much additional details I could get out of the white plumage.

Post processing done:
1. "Levels" adjustment on the "Histogram" by increasing the "Input Levels" of the "Black" slider (at 32), and balancing the "Mid-tones" slider to darken the image (at 0.83).
2. "Brightness" -2.
4. "Saturation" +8.
5. Selected the background with the "Magic Wand" and "Lasso" tools.
6. Applied "Neat Image" at its default settings.
7. Added "Yellow" with "Variations" and the slider set to "Fine".
8. Inversed selection so that only the bird was selected.
9. Used the "Brush Tool" at 7% "Opacity" (black) to darken the wings.
10. Adjusted "USM" at 200% amount, 0.3 radius, and 0.0 threshold.
11. Selected the beak only with the "Lasso" tool.
12. Set grey colour and painted the beak with the "Brush Tool" at 60% "Opacity"
13. Selected "Save for Web", and adjusted the "Quality" upwards to 192kB.

Once again it was not my intention to "modify", but just to present a different view on a lovely photo.

Best regards

Hi Smitha

Just a slightly darker version with only a couple of small adjustments of your lovely shot. Hope you don't mind though.

Adjusted black side of levels slightly darker.
Selected the BG and used Neat Image at default setting.
Selected the bird and adjusted brightness at -4.
Made the beak a little more noticable with brush tool at 7% opacity (white).

I have also tried another workshop with different settings just to see if I could push it a little further. Hope you don't mind.

Hi Luc

Done a quick workshop to try and put some spark of colour back into this flower and to remove the noise in the background. Unfortunately it seems like the file had some adverse processing done to it already as it was rather pixelised and it was only 62kB to start with (49kB after download) so there wasn't really much to work with.

Anyway, what I did was:

1. Selected the background with the "Magic Wand" and "Lasso" tools.
2. Removed the noise by running Neat Image twice at its standard settings.
3. Inversed selection so that only the flower was selected.
4. "Contrast" +7.
5. "Brightness" -2.
6. "Saturation" +8.
7. Added a dash of "Red" with "Variations" and the slider set to "Fine".
8. Adjusted "USM" at 95% amount, 0.3 radius, and 0.0 threshold.
9. Deselected all, selected "Save for Web", and adjusted the "Quality" upwards to 189kB.

Probably not all that successful a workshop, but as I mentioned it was a very thin file to work with. Whatever, I hope you like the slight optimisation.

Best regards

Hi Mike

As I said, this is a lovely capture and all I tried to do with this workshop was to bring out some spark in the colour tones. Thanks for allowing workshops to be posted.

Post processing optimisation:
1. "Levels" adjustment on the "Histogram" by decreasing the "White" slider until it moved slightly into the graph (at 210), increasing the "Black" slider until it moved slightly into the graph (at 38), and balancing the "Mid-tones" slider to darken the image (at 0.97).
2. "Contrast" +9.
3. "Brightness" +7.
4. "Saturation" -6.
5. Added "Warming Filter (85)" at 25% "Density".
6. Added "Magenta" with "Variations" and the slider set to "Fine".
7. Selected the cheetah with the "Magic Wand" and "Lasso" tools.
8. Adjusted "USM" at 95% amount, 0.3 radius, and 0.0 threshold.
9. Selected the top half of the photo (just below the bottom line of the road and excluding the cheetah's head) with the "Magic Wand" and "Lasso" tools.
10. Applied "Gaussian Blur" at 0.6 radius.
11. Deselected all, selected "Save for Web", and adjusted the "Quality" upwards to 195kB.

Unfortunately I made no notes while I did the optimisation and had to retrace my steps after saving the image, so the above values should be seen as approximate settings.

I see you used Photoshop Elements 5.0 and I used Photoshop CS2, but I think you should be able to reproduce most of the steps set out above.

I hope you like the result.

Hi Goutham

I merely selected the darker areas of the owl's face and body and applied a bit of "Levels" adjustment. Then just for the fun of it I increased the "Saturation" +8, and applied "Smart Sharpen" at 50% and 0.3 radius.

Hope you don't mind my attempt too much.
