(1455) [2007-02-02 17:24:47] [1] | Hi Loot!
Here's the workshop.
I played with different aspects including sharpness, levels, NeatImage, shadows, and also cropped to get rid of a bit more of the tree.
Hope you don't mind!

NSRI To The Resque | loot
(9335) [2006-06-25 22:10:25] | Fortunately two ladies who were nearby, phoned ones husband who then contacted the NSRI and alerted them concerning our predicament. My son’s girl friend Naomi was waiting up ahead on the main road to direct them (the NSRI) to our position. While we were still struggling with the other 4x4 who tried to free us, we suddenly herd a cry of relieve when my son saw the NSRI Land Rover approaching across the tidal pool. It was like the cavalry came to the rescue and I could have sworn I heard some trumpets blowing.
Once they were on the scene it did not take long before my car was standing on firm ground and I could start breathing normally. It sure was a close shave and thankfully everything turned out to be just fine again, but hopefully I've learned a valuable lesson.
To save lives on South African waters the National Sea Rescue Institute of South Africa (served by voluntary personnel) is dedicated to assisting people in distress both at sea and on inland waters. To read more about these wonderful people and their institute you can click here.
PS. Obviously I took this photo after the fiasco, but I had to post it to say THANKS and give the NSRI the acknowledgement they deserve. |

Stuck In The Mud | loot
(9335) [2006-06-25 22:03:49] [+] | Obviously it is clear, this car was stuck in the mud and was going nowhere quick unless a miracle in the form of a strong 4x4 with a big winch arrived on the scene. With the assistance of 4 other helping hands we tried to lift and move the car, but it would not budge. To worsen matters even more, within minutes after we got stuck, the weather turned and a strong wind started to blow and if that was not enough, the rain started to pelt down. Please note that the water you see around the vehicle was not there before we got stuck. There was no indication that I was approaching drift sand. At least I am not that stupid to drive into such an obvious trap.
Hysteria was lying on the leer and waiting patiently to storm us like a herd of buffalo on a stampede.
PS. Unfortunately the quality of this photo is not very good as it was taken with my son’s cell phone camera which is rather limited in pixel size. |

Set white and black point
Set contrast just a bit using middle slider
Close
Open levels, set Grey point, now more black and white.
Crop rotate
Fill in top Bg by cloning in green
Actual Pixels, make size 600 high, quality not good enough for 700 high, as we use a worked and small image. Original should be better to work with.
Sharpen edges
Fade sharpen edges to modify,
Slider to left to get eyeball saturation, save.
You hav a nore in your face picture, looking slightly up, enhancing the ungly teeth, that smiles so beautifully. The ear lines up with the top, right corner, making a diagonal, lip points to top left corner
Just slight, subjective changes. DO not flip this one - your eye folloes the nose up to his eye and lock, then back to the smile, no wasted eye movement, you hold the concentration of your viewer.
Enhanced colour adds a slight oemff to the picture.
Please feel free to disagree. I kmow this is one of your older pics, just wanted to see if one can improve it.
Note the neck id now nearly vertival, forming a nice angle with the head.
Hoop dis ok

Set contrast with leveles bt moving central slider to right, 82
Set grey point on leg
Selected black right wingtip with magic wand, set hue saturation to get rid of blue. Overall, I hope a slightly stronger saturated picture. The colour is more a chestnust than brown.
This is totally subjetive by the way.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 | loot
(9335) [2006-06-06 21:56:47] [+] | I have uploaded this workshop out of plain curiosity. When I posted the original Photo, I was a proud TN member for 2 solid days only.
I obtained my digital camera and the 'magic' post processing software 1 month prior to this day and was totally perplexed by it all. Everything I photographed was with the camera set to auto as I had no idea how the 'advanced' creative modes, manual settings or any other functions worked. I had no clue about the software and was really thrown into the deep-end, which meant I had to 'discover' everything as I went along.
I received the ArcSoft PhotoStudio 5.0 software with my camera and thought this was the greatest thing since sliced bread, but with time it dawned on me that there are far better products on the market. Eventually I acquired the Photoshop Elements 2.0 package and that was when things gradually started to change. Slowly I gained in experience and skills, learning more and more about PP techniques through the generous inputs of many kind and wonderful TN members. Obviously it changed the outcomes of my photos quite drastically.
Now, 4 months down the line, I thought to experiment with one of my earlier photos and redo the PP completely, just to see if one can see the improvement, and if so, how much? I probably did not spend a quarter of the time on this workshop than what I spent on the original posting and I think the improvement is clear to the eye.
Viva la difference.

'High Rise' Bird Hide | loot
(9335) [2006-06-04 07:46:53] | This is one of two 'high rise' bird hides situated at the Thulasihleka Bird Sanctuary.
The hides are mounted below a conveyor belt which runs between a fertilizer manufacturer and the dry goods harbour at Richards Bay and is approximately 15m up above ground level.
This photo was taken from the water bound hide which can be seen here. It overlooks a bare area between the reeds that are frequently visited by loads of pelicans and various duck. |
