grad filter in sky | mbasil
(3094) [2006-09-09 10:04:57] [5] | | I tried to bring down the exposure in the sky with an after-the-fact grad filter on my editor. It looks a bit weak, but when done right it should make for a better exposure balance between the sky and rest of the shot. |

(13269) [2006-08-30 11:41:21] | | I can already hear folks saying, "But it breaks the 1/3 - 2/3 rule!" The original was more an image of the sky with the underexposed bottom third kind of dull in mid tone values. There really is nothing wrong with the original composition, I just wanted to see how the scene would look with the wonderful sunlit tree as the main subject and focal point. The brightest light against the darkest dark is the upper tree branch and cloud on the right side. It grabs attention first. Cropping out some sky gives the tree dominance. It also gives a kind of interesting Yin Yang composition. I also used Shadows and Highlights to put more value variety in the land area. I think now the concept of overlap to enhance the illusion of depth works pretty effectively. The foreground bushes are better separated from the hills behind. The main tree stands out better from the sky and background foilage. The clouds feel more like they are behind the mountain and appear to recede into the distance. The more or less even values of the original make it appear more two demensional and flat rather than various layers receding into the distance. |

 crop, brighten | mbasil
(3094) [2006-08-02 18:53:29] [1] | | I thought the the lighting on the trees and their reflection were marvelous, and the foreground distracted me from there. So here's a tighter crop. I also brightened it a bit. But looking at it posted, I may have overdone it a tad. |

(13269) [2006-07-20 19:35:04] [3] | | As always I am looking for the simplest composition. I just wanted to see what this super image would look like with one focal point rather that two. I just cropped, cloned out a little bit of a cloud, and framed to focus the viewer. |
