 Image tweaks | pauljk
(226) [2008-03-04 12:41:55] [5] [+] | Hi Clive,
Hope you are okay with this...
1. The first thing I noticed was that there is no real black in the image. So I used a threshold layer in CS3 to find a potential black point, which was bottom right just under one of the dune grass bases.
2. Used a curves layer and set the black point by using the black point dropper tool and clicked on the spot as identified by the treshold layer in 1 above. The is no pure white in the image so setting white point is not applicable. Anyhow the bright point of the sky is well place on the histogram.
3.Bright dune grasses. The dune grass adds a good anchor to the image and I thought they need to stand out a little more prevalent. So used the lasso tool to roughly outline them, feathered the selection and then applied a curves layer using the selection as a mask. Pulled the right hand side of the curve over to brighten a little.
4. Could have stopped at this point but though a little contrast in the beach sand which has wonderful texture might help. So again used a rough selection via the lasso tool, applied a curves layer with the selection as mask. Pulled up the contrast by steepening the curve.
5. Added a light vignette around entire image via use of the rectangular marquee tool and feathured, inverted and applied a curves layer. Pulled down the centre of the curve to slightly darken edges and contain the eye.
Hope this was/is of use.
Cheers

Colour Cast Removal Plus | pauljk
(226) [2007-04-04 18:43:57] [2] | Hi Robert,
COrrected colour cast using iCorrect Edit Pro 5, this is a very useful Photoshop plugin for quick colour correction and black/white point setting.
Used shadow/higlight tool in PS to try and bring back a little shadow detail. This would work much better on the original as there is not a lot of data to work with at TN size.
SLight sharpen using USM and saved for upload to TN.
Hope this is of use.
Cheers

 Colour Correction | pauljk
(226) [2007-03-12 01:14:47] [3] | Hi Jane,
Slight colour cast on my calibrated monitor which I have attempted to correct.
For this correction I used the following PS plug in iCorrect Edit Pro see www.pictocolor.com.
1. Corrected blue cast in shadows.
2. Corrected magenta cast in highlights and mid tones.
3. Set balck and white points on the image.
The iCorrect plugin is very good for quick and simple colour correction.
Cheers

 Increase Contrast | pauljk
(226) [2007-03-11 20:18:26] | Hi Paul, Hope you don't mind my interpretation of your image. Just thought I'd pull a bit more contrast out of the image.
Process pretty simple. Just added a lelvel layer in PS CS2 and pulled the balck and white points in a little. Shifted the gamma (centre) slider to the right a little. Changed blanding mode to luminosity so as not to destroy colour.
Cheers

 Change Colour Balance | pauljk
(226) [2007-02-21 21:24:08] [1] | Set colour to more neutral tone (on my claibrated monitor).
1. Set black and white points using curves layer. Pretty much spot on anyhow. This clean up a little of the cast in the black plumage.
2. Adjusted colour using grey picker tool on another curves layer. Selected around the white patch on the breast of the bird.
3. Increase eye highlight detail via lasso selection feathed to 5 pixels and then added a curves layer set to screen blend mode. Reduced opacity to 40%.

Colour Cast Removal + Tweeks | pauljk
(226) [2007-01-25 02:43:10] [3] | Hi Wes,
Hope you don't mind my interpretation of your image. I'm running a calibrated monitor and to me this image looks as though it has a bit of a red/magenta cast. So to address did the following.
1. Used curves layer set the the black point eyedropper on the black pupil of the eye. This removed most of the cast across the image.
2. Added another curves layer and pulled individual RGB levels slightly to tweek colour correction.
3. Pulled shadows detail slightly via shadow/highlight tool in PS CS2, set shadow level to 5%.
4. Pull out eye detail. Used the lasso tool to outline the eye. Feathered with 3 pixels. Created a curves layer and set the blend mode to "screen". Reduced opacity to 50%.
5. Flattened and saved for web.
This would look a load better on the full res image...things fall to pieces with small images like that on TN.
Cheers

Set Black and White Points | pauljk
(226) [2007-01-18 18:04:22] [4] | Hi John,
I've run a WS on your image. Hope you don't mind. Looking at the image it looks a little flat...and the histogram shows this with no white or black points set on the image. In PS CS2 created a levels layer and pulled in the white point and balck point sliders untl hisogram was spread evenly across the full range. Use the alt key while pulling the sliders so you can see when clipping starts to occur.
The image colour has degraded somewhat due to the small file size. This would look a load better on the original image before resize.
Cheers

Composition & Image Tweek | pauljk
(226) [2007-01-12 16:58:14] [3] | Hi Simon,
Main change here is the crop. I've paced the bird to the left of the frame, giving a bit more space to the right...allows the image to "breathe"a little. Limited by pixels here...your original may well be able to be better cropped.
PP work.
ISSUE 1 - Improve feather detail. Set black and white points for image using a levels adjustment layer.
- Applied shadow/hight tool to shadows at 20% the pull detail from the plumage in shaod on the birds chest.
- then improved eye definition - slected eye using lasso tool and feathered by 3 pixels. Created a cuvers adjustment layer. Didn't touch the curve settings but did changethe blend mode of the layer to "Screen" this gave good eye edge definition.
ISSUE Sharpness - Ran PKSharpner Pro for 800pixel wide image with Medium sharpening.
- flattened image
- converted to sRGB space and the upload to web.
Hope this of use...if so can you please mark as useful..trying to get my gold WS status :o)
Cheers

Improve shadow and eye detail | pauljk
(226) [2007-01-12 01:59:32] [5] | Hi SImon,
This is based on your workshop posting. I've extracted a bit more detail again. Amazing to see what is lurking in those pixels. Two pass approach.
1. Use Shadow/highlight tool in PS CS2 in advanced mode. Set the shadow percent value to about 40%. This pulled of the shadow detail in the dark areas of the swan.
2. Enhanced eye detail via a curves layers. Used the lasso tool to select around the eye. Created a cureves layer with a mask based on the selection. Set the curve layer balnd mode to "screen" reuduced opacity of the layer to about 60-80%.
Hope this looks okay to you.
Cheers

Enhance Eye and Shadow detail | pauljk
(226) [2007-01-11 18:15:41] [4] | Hi Piotr,
My interpretation of your image, hop you don't mind.
1. Used PS CS2 SHadow/Highlight tool set in 20% on the shadow to bring out foreground and feather detail.
2. Used the lasso tool to outline the eye. Feathered by 4 pixels. Added a curves layer. Changed blend mode of curves layer to screen. This pulled out a little more eye detail
Cheers
