 From Kärnten - to Ivan. | peter_stoeckl
(9375) [2008-07-31 09:04:40] | This one is dedicated to one of our top naturalists and nature photographers here on TN, to Ivan Kruys (Argus).
The picture was taken from close distance - approx. 30cm, and therefore with reasonably good details:
Oeneis glacialis,
Alpine Grayling,
Gletscherfalter.
That lonesome specimen was seen at an elevation as low as 1500m - and no glaciers around.
Location: Mussen, Lesachtal, Carinthia, Austria, near the village of Kötschach-Mauthen. These remote alpine pastures were cleared from forests in medieval times, and are still maintained by cutting grass and harvesting hay every second year in alternating patches. There is an immense variety of plants and invertebrates up there.
To see the location, you may click> here.
Camera: SONY DSC-H5, 3072 x 2304 pixel, sRGB, 16mm macro (= 96mm at 35mm SLR), F/8, 1/125sec., ISO-125; handheld, no flash; 09.06.2007, 13:34.
Postwork: Photoshop Elements, slightly cropped, downsized to web presentation, brightness, contrast and saturation adjusted.
Hope you enjoy. |

 The location. | peter_stoeckl
(9375) [2008-07-28 13:25:44] | The location: the path leading to Hochjochferner glacier near the village of Vent, Oetztal, Tyrol. Taken at an elevation of 2630m a.s.l., 2008 07 19, 14:57.
By the way: The rapid drawback of Alpine glaciers may be well be seen here. The straight line in the middle of the slope to the left that looks like a path actually is the the edge of the glacier's moraine showing the glacier's level at around 1850. The thickness of the ice layer has clearly reduced by at least one hundred meters, and the extension of length by more than one kilometre since then. And melting down goes on every summer with an even increased speed since about 1990. |

(9375) [2008-06-28 08:55:07] | Satyrium spini,
same day, same location, close approach.
The long soft wingtails may be seen better here. They were in peculiar slow constant motion.
The camera:
SONY DSC-H5, 3072 x 2304 pixel, sRGB, 18mm macro-zoom setting, F/5, 1/160 sec., ISO-125; -0.3 bias, no tripod, no flash; 07.06.2008, 12:17.
Postwork: Photoshop Elements, slightly cropped, downsized to the web, selectively resharpened, levels slightly adjusted.

(9375) [2008-06-25 08:13:38] | Argynnis paphia L.
The Female.
Silver washed Fritillary
Kaisermantel, Silberstrich
The female A. paphia has a significantly different appearance. One may even mistake the female for a different species. It does not have the male's broad dark veins on the forewings, all the dark spots however are more extended. The wing colour is not a bright orange yellow, it is more or less shaded and tends towards a greenish hue.
This picture was taken at the same day at the same location: Lago d’Idro in northern Italy August 5, 2004.
Camera: Minolta Dimage 7Hi, with integrated tele-zoom and macro, no flash.
Hope you enjoy. |

 The Underside. | peter_stoeckl
(9375) [2008-06-20 07:23:58] | To verify the identification of members of the Lycaenidae family, a documentation of the underside of wings very often is necessary. This Argus Blue was quite cooperative.

SONY DSC-H5, 3072 x 2304 pixel, sRGB, 17mm macro-zoom setting (equiv. 110mm at conventional 35mm SLR), F/5, 1/320 sec., ISO-125; -0.3 bias, no tripod, no flash; 18.05.2008, 11:57.
