In the workshop, again a picture of a Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias), cruising just below the surface, viewed from a boat location Gansbaai, South Africa by Mr. Scott Johnson.

Although the quality of the original picture is already high, by using photo editing software, imaging quality can still be slightly improved.

Technique:

Check-up on quality/processing strategy-preview; Minor manual adjustment of B/C-lvls, for optimal Brightness/Contrast lvls (Br+1/Cntr+3) ; followed by subtle digital sharpening, multiple algorithms incl. USM ; despeckling on Background (not the shark).

Please note that the improvement in imaging quality on the original is just marginal, in my opinion not even worth mentioning: The reason why I did a workshop, is to check on the original, as a previous workshop photo presented here appears to have its contrast boosted beyond comprehension, making the shark look as if it was lit from the inside, having swallowed a Mega Maglite !

Happy Halloween.

In the workshop, a high quality picture of a Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias) snapping on tuna, viewed from a boat, location Gansbaai, South Africa.

Original photo by Mr. Scott Johnson.

Although the quality of the original picture is already very high, by using photo editing software, imaging quality can still be slightly improved.

Technique:

Weighted balancing on B/C-lvls (itterative), for optimal whitebalance, followed by digital sharpening (multiple algorithms), for a slight increase in perceived detail & brilliance of the sunlight reflecting on the water.

In the workshop, a picture of Carcharodon carcharias or: Great White Shark.

In this case the picture was taken underwater, just below the surface, where the yellow part of the frequency spectrum still can penetrate, here, causing a prominent emphasis on Yellow; furthermore both Cyan ("Water") and Green are slightly emphasized, causing a somewhat "troubled" imaging.

By performing a Whitebalance in post-processing and adjusting B/C-lvls accordingly, we can slightly enhance imaging.

Note that in the source picture USM sharpening has been excessively applied, introducing a plainly visible facetted glass-look including "clipped-to-white speckles", causing the picture to be beyond repair. Despeckling was necessary, loss of detail and blurring the result.

Technique:

Manual Color-balance: R+24 (less Cyan), G-5, B+11 (Less Yellow i.e. "sunlight") ; Contrast +17/Brightness -9 ; Global despeckling, followed by moderate sharpening (USM).

Great shot, Scott. I took a few liberties on your photo. First, I cropped out some of the empty ocean. Second, I adjusted the color. Third, I increased the contrast. Fourth, I ran it through a noise filter (Noiseware). Finally, I give it a "sharpen" for good measure. Hopefully, it's almost worth falling over for.
Best,
Mike
