Copied the right side of the background and pasted it onto the left side, flipped it horizontally and placed it so it overlapped the original left edge, then used a soft brush to erase part of the overlap and merge the two edges naturally. Merge layers and save.

I just increased the highlights a bit for more brightness, and lightened the midtones to bring out the details in the trees and mountains, then increased the darks for just a touch more contrast. I hope you like.

Levels and Dodging

I made two copies of the image and used Levels to lighten the midtones on the bottom copy until I could see the details on the shadowed parts of the bird. Then I erased the bird on the top copy so the lightened bird showed through but the sky and leaves remained the same. The face still looked too dark, so I used the Dodge tool to lighten it some more.

I straightened the horizon and cropped a wee bit, increased the Contrast and clicked once on Sharpen.

Bushtit Nest

As you can see, the nest is very unassuming. No one walking past would give it a second look, or suspect that it might contain eggs or baby birds. I plan to go back occasionally to monitor this spot, and hopefully I will be lucky enough to see the fledgelings before they fly away.

Levels & color balance

I increased the highlights using Levels, then decreased the yellow using Color Balance. It is all a matter of taste of course, but I hope you like it.
