i then used focus magic plugin to sharpen some more

i used the Photoshop CS3 raw filter and increased exposure.
you could use the curves tool or levels tool as well
pretty much any software lets you brighten an image like this.

apparently the original has some digital oversharpenign artifacts that aren't obvious on my monitor. i went back to the RAW file and reprocessed the shot with less sharpening. to be honest i had to squint at a low resolution monitor at work to see the effect but for those folks who get concerned over that here's a better version

corrected a motion blur that was nearly vertical
selected the green region
used noise ninja to smooth it out
used curves to darken it

inverted the selection
darkened the rest of the image using the curves tool
selected the sky
darkened with the curves tool

used the color balance to shift midtones from green to magenta
used the white dropper in the levels tool to set the white on the birds head to white.

increased saturation a bit
then used quickmask to select the area where the eye is and the feathers seem pushed up.
i then used curves to increase the lightness of the white areas and darken the dark spots
finally i used the dodge tool to lighten the eye
