Gives more contrast.
Sharpened in LAB mode. A little...
I think there's a bit of OE in the beak...could be looked after...
The sunlight is the cause of these 'problems' of course;-)

Levels...open the histogram and you'll see the flat part. So ...increased contrast through sliders.

Further...in curves: selected two points at the downside part of the line and changed the curve between these points through selecting it by clicking.
Cropped at bit.
Not done: reducing the generated noise |

I did a little workshop with your picture. Like Sabine said it is a good post but slightly out of focus.
My workflow:
Levels and contrast adjusted
Cropping
And sharpening with USM
These tools were used in Photoshop CS2
