My guess is that they (the academics) are well aware of these specimens as this photo was probably taken somewhere in an aquarium with a tripod. I say this as a deduction from the shutter speed. At 1/16 of a second it would be impossible to take such a shot in and underwater dive (IMHO). Few, if any, people would be able to take a photo hand held at this shutter speed even with their feet planted firmly on mother earth. It's a pity that Eko didn't post notes to clarify this issue.
Just as a matter of interest though. There are 3 specimens on the photo. Count the tails.
