Although I agree on gardening, and I did some gardening in this photo as well. I strongly believe the photo must also show more than only a clean mushroom. The leaves in this photo add to the entire composition. I think it has more to do on the goal of a photo than that it is a standard rule. If you make photos for determination only, than gardening is a must. If you make photos for the sake of 'art' a different approach is needed. In regards of unfocused leaves or grass blades, they add depth to anotherwise 'flat' photo.
