Hi Steve

Happy New Year! Thanks for your visit. The brown on the head is actually pollen from the flower. When they stick their head in the flower they go inside such a long way the pollen rubs off onto the head. I have seen the same result after a Starling has been gorging on the flowers. Considering both birds have beautiful plumage colours that are only seen when the sun hits them the right way, the rusty brown pollen makes a nice contrast to the dark plumage.
