Hi Jane-
I can understand your question about getting so close to the owl. I'll add a note for Bruno because I also use the Canon S5. It is an 8 MP, so you can crop and use a small part of the frame if necessary and still have an image that is very good quality for TN sizing. Most importantly, the optics are amazing- the optical zoom is 12x, which gives the equivalent of a 432 mm lens. Even with this focal length, it is light and easy to handle and only protrudes 5 or 6 cm from the camera body. I use this long lens all the time with good effects (see for example my "Two Monarchs" and "I'm All Ears" posts). It one of the biggest reasons I've chosen to use only a compact ultrazoom camera. Read also my intro for my philosophy on this (and I'm sure Bruno would agree with at least some of this). Look also at my supermacro work to understand the power of this optics package- the S2, which I used before the S5, had the same optics. This is NOT a P&S camera and results like Bruno's owl are normal with this telephoto capability, just as they would with a dSLR and long lens- it's just easier to use and more likely to be there and ready when you want it.
