I hope that your words about personal bankruptcy are not absolutely truth because I know what they mean (terrible 1992-1995 years in Ukraine and 13USD per month - full professor salary).
Nikon D700 vs D300 has image sensor cleaner and better high ISO performance (last one is key feature for me). However, for macro and tele shooting crop-factor 1.5 D300 is more suitable. FF also has some sense :).
