Hi mate and thanks for dropping by :)
Sorry for getting the star-trail shot before you...but in my defense, you did manage you were going to try some long time ago :)
I know it's difficult to get one. I had few attempts in other places, but much closer to civilization and therefore much more light pollution. They weren't all that good.
This time, though, i had a much better setting. I picked a composition with the Polaris in the center of the frame, took a few 30sec. exposures at ISO1600 to get a good focus and then fired this 30 minute one. I was worried that the lens would get foggy because of the cool and moist air, but i was lucky it didn't (i also had my camera high on my tripod...the farther from the ground, the better, in this case).
The photos came out well but i couldn't fire another one with a different composition because of the mist that was already forming...and it came fast!
I thought about the problems you mentioned for your star tails and i had an idea: why not shoot over the sea? There should be any big light pollution in that direction. Just wait for a (somewhat) clear night and have a go :)
Best of luck and take care
