It's a youngster from this year, so whether male or female can't be seen yet. The females stay looking like this, the males change once they mature. You're right, we wouldn't have seen it this close up, hadn't it been for the fact that it flew into the window. I've never seen one up close before..
Btw the bird didn't hit *my* window, but that of the flat above Mogens's. I live one block away from him ;-)
