I think I'll try to explain the DOF problem ;)
It's optical illusion ;)
The far and middle birds were sitting in simmilar distance from the camera. If you take a closer look you will see that they are both only partly in focus. In PP when I tried to remove noise from BG, I blurred some twigs a bit too much and this made the DOF a bit unclear.
